Hello, everyone! Looks like people are out and about today.

That panda cub is so tiny, Penny. And the hummingbird - another great expression. Michele Fowler has a knack for capturing the hummers and their personalities. Her pictures make me appreciate their vitality and feistiness. Thank you for posting them for us.

Enjoy your day, everyone. It has actually been nice here for a few days in a row.

Always Loved, Never Forgotten, in Memory of our dear Sweet Peeps.

This is one of my last screen captures of our Limuw. We lost him on Aug. 15, 2007.

Limuw's light still shines. Here is his candle link, still going after two years.

What's new with the cranes? I don't see much on the cam although the adult role model looks like it wants to get inside the fence so it can go wading too :D

They haven't posted much in the way of updates lately, Penny. I think they are trying to keep their little "I Give a Whoop" fundraiser at the top of the page.

The chicks are doing well, though, flying and following the plane eagerly in their training flights. The training sessions start at 6 am CST on the cam, 7 am for me. I've only been up early once to see it, need to get to bed earlier or set the alarm.

Friday, August 14

If you haven't noticed, Lun Lun and Xi Lan have been spending an abundant amount of time in the dayroom with the hammock. It's not that they prefer that dayroom, but instead, we had a problem with the other one. One of the legs on the climbing structure in the other dayroom broke at ground level. The structure was still solid enough for the adults to climb, but we weren't sure about Xi Lan. The problem was that we didn't want Xi Lan playing with the end of the broken leg and having Lun Lun climb up on the structure, pinching his paw or whatever else that was under the leg. Because the weather has been very hot lately, it has been difficult getting enough time in the dayroom to be able to replace the leg, because the pandas need the air conditioned space. The good news is, after weeks of searching for just the right log and having a nice cool morning, we were able to get the pandas outside and fix the structure on Thursday. I look forward to seeing Xi Lan and Lun Lun back in that dayroom today. It's always nice to see Xi Lan explore a new place, even if it isn't so new.

Australia knows drought too well

DROUGHT experts have for the first time proven a link between rising levels of greenhouse gases and a decline in rainfall.
A three-year collaboration between the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO has confirmed that the drought is not just a natural dry stretch but a shift related to climate change.

Its suppose to get up to 85 today in Sydney, thats HOT for our late winter!
