eaglepedia revisited March 28, 2007 Eagle Hunting/Eating (part II): An eagle hunting area can range from 1,700 to 10,000 acres, depending on the availability/abundance of food. It takes a large amount of energy to hunt with possibly only one in 18 attacks being successful, so an eagle must spend a lot of time resting, Bald eagle are fast fliers and when they go into a dive, the eagle pulls in his wings to minimize their surface area. On occasion, eagles will hunt in pairs. An eagle mantles (partially opening its wings) its food to protect it from being stolen or seen by other eagles. The can east 1 pound of fish in around 4 minutes, holding the prey with one foot while tearing off bites with its beak. The eagle will steal food from other eagles as well as other birds. Chasing them is usually enough to persuade it to drop its prey! http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle3.html ![]() note catfish in talon of eagle in bottom photo (click on photo to see larger image) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

![]() Photo I took a few years ago at our zoo of mother and two "cubs" playing with their ball. Mom is on the left. She has since died and we have a couple of new bears too. The enclosure is really nice. You can watch the bears from above or walk down to watch them from under the water. |

Love today's photos - I agree - goof off - I'd be doing that! Tried to renew mom's prescriptions on line (as they say the easy way) - but it never works so - back on the phone! Have to call her and go thru all the meds - then call them and go thru all the meds - then call her back ....... grrrrrrr but it's all done for the moment. AND her Dr. will only give her 6 mos. prescription instead of a year so it's a real big deal 2 x's a year - GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR She's not happy now with the meal program - can't blame her - same food over and over - but at least she's eating cause she refuses or forgets to cook ........ we have another alternative so will be looking into that now! I need to go home again but she's scared that I'm coming home to move her - that's what really needs to happen but she's so anti - move - don't know how we'll approach it so that she's happy about it ....... oh boy! ANYWAY boss isn't in yet so I've had some time to deal with this stuff. I need a little IP! (yeah so it's a little early) LOL |

Cat - Lovely Polar bear photo. I guess they like to play with a ball in the water. In my second photo today, the bear is playing with a small red ball.

Deb - I feel so bad for you with the dilemma you are in with your Mom. Been there, done that. My Mom just had no choice, it had to be a retirement facility as she just couldn't afford or want full time home care. Does your Mom know anyone who is in a retirement place, maybe she would reconsider. Perhaps if she saw how nice some of them are, and she still has her privacy, you may be able to convince her. Go have a glass of wine with your lunch..........it might help.

PANDA UPDATE........ Monday, August 17 Can you walk and chew gum at the same time? Well Xi Lan probably could, or at least he can chew a biscuit and climb the structure at the same time. As you may have read previously, we have been giving him some biscuits and banana as part of his diet, but it is not always easy to do. The reason, Lun! If she sees him with something or knows that he is about to receive a treat, she will take it away from him. We have to continually think of different ways and give it at different times, so that “missy piggy pants” does not take it away for herself. Today, after shifting him in from outside, I gave him a biscuit at the door and he ran away, trying to get up the tree before his mother got to him. Along the way I could see his mouth moving as if he was trying to soften it up, so that by the time that he reached the top it was nice and soft and easy to eat. Joseph T. Svoke Carnivore Keeper III Will the next hit song be "Smelly Tree"? .....
