Just what I needed, a Zoo fix before heading to bed!

A campaign will be starting up to ensure that the big oil companies do not destroy the ONLY breeding ground for the for the flatback sea turtle on Barrow Island. its so disappointing that the Federal Gov Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett (former lead singer for the band Midnight Oil) cannot stand up for something he once believed in...

Hello, everyone! It's a rainy day here today.

Ozzie, I hope the unusual weather in Australia has settled down today. I couldn't get your link about the flatback sea turtles but will check later.

Topa, your photos show all the special memories you, Barry, and Rachel have created for your grandchildren. The only one who might not remember would be the baby, that's why it's so important to take those photos! You will need a couple of weeks to recuperate, I think. Thanks for sharing all these special times with us. Did your Hebrew lessons come in handy?

Carole, the bear pictures were a great way to start the day. :)^

Enjoy your day, everybody.

Hi everyone! Yesterday, got my new inside DSL/phone line installed. The guy said that here, the humidity and sea salt air can really do a number on all power lines. It is now plugged in one foot from the computer! I am fully back on line for the first time in three weeks! :**: :**: :**:

I wanted to come over here and say thank you to IWS. My name was drawn, and since I couldn't make it to Catalina, chose the beautiful Choakin green marble eagle plate.

A special :}^ :Hugs: and :)^ for whoever made these beautiful plates available for the winners to choose from. The photo does not do it justice! The photo is "carved" or etched on the plate - etched in gold. If you look at the plate you see an eagle picture, but move it around, and you see the gold around every leaf and feather. :><: :><: It is exqusite! It came in the mail on Monday. Christmas in August. :P

I will cherish it always!

Was up last night late. We got the computer line installed. Then ran off to the Tuesday night jam session. Wow! We had so many musicians come in! One couple showed up for the first time in ages. Kitty (the wife) is recuperating from open heart surgery. A month or two ago, she was not doing well. She is finally getting up and out and getting her energy back. Both she and her husband sing, and he plays a special harmonica. She wasn't sure how she was going to sing, but got up and I could see after she sang the first line, her body and soul got into the song and she did great! Everyone gave her a special round of applause! Medicine for the soul.

More later!

Congratulations Wrightflyer and Harpo on winning those beautiful plates!

And a BIG THANK YOU to who ever donated the plates to the NAC,
they certainly kept the fundraising going!

I just called the kids and their cab was just pulling in front of their apartment.

The flight was easy, the kiddos slept most of the way, and they are home!

They said they had a great time and will call me back as soon as they have
something to eat and the kids are settled.

A friend made dinner for them and left it in their apt.

It is 5:30 pm Jerusalem time.

Clean-up duties at the pen - scrubbing the little black plastic water ponds (unseen) and then outside to trim and tidy around the fence.

A Happy Rescue Story :D

A Nanaimo-area bald eagle spent Thursday night hanging upside down from the tip of an 80-foot tree on Protection Island, where the adult female had somehow snagged her back talon and could not get free.

The injured bird could have been easy prey for vultures who had started to circle overhead yesterday morning, according to conservationists, but a brave residential tree climber went up the Douglas fir early yesterday morning and brought the eagle safely to the ground.

The injuries were minor and the bird should be back home within the next few days, but the experience was "intense," explained Jill Radcliffe of Pacific Northwest Raptors in Duncan. Residents had spotted the bird Thursday afternoon and contacted Radcliffe later that evening.

Early the following morning, she and Mike Cardinal of Canadian Tree Services took a ferry to the island.

Cardinal climbed the tree, dislodged the talon, placed the bird into a duffle bag and lowered her to the ground. X-rays show the eagle hadn't broken any bones, but she suffered severe swelling in her leg.

Spending a few days resting is not nearly as bad as the alternative outcome, had the bird not been rescued, according to Radcliffe.

"They're pretty strong birds so it could have been an unpleasant demise over several days," she said. "It's unlikely it would have been a quick thing."

Cardinal specializes in removing dangerous trees, but often his Cowichan Bay company gets calls to rescue cats. He gladly accepted the challenge to save a suffering eagle.

"I had to cut back the tree a bit, so I could break off the tip, but once I did, the talon just came right out," he said. "I was glad to do it. I'd do it again any time."

Rescuing an eagle from a tree is quite rare, according to Radcliffe, who said most calls are for birds on the ground because of injuries.

Of all the rescues at the Duncan centre, 98% of them are human-related, collisions with vehicles, poisonings or electrocutions.

"This particular kind of rescue wasn't common," Radcliffe explained.

"I could maybe see a baby getting into trouble like this, but she is an adult. It just happened to be a bit of bad luck that she got caught up in there and couldn't get away."

Pacific Northwest Raptors has helped approximately 20 eagles so far this year and about 70 other types of birds.
