SAN DIEGO ZOO REPORT...........Baby’s First Exam Posted at 11:40 am September 3, 2009 by Kathy Hawk This morning, around 8, we did our first panda cub exam. Everything went very well! Bai Yun was very calm and ate during the entire exam. It was pretty challenging, trying to crawl into the den and get the cub. Bai had done an extremely good job of threading/weaving bamboo to make a nest! We were very fortunate that the little one had a nursing bout before the exam. This really helps settle the cub, and believe me, this one was very CALM about the whole process! The cub, who is 29 days old, weighed in at 1,259 grams (2.8 pounds), nice and chubby, and was 14.7 inches (37 centimeters) long. Our veterinarian, Dr. Jeff Pye, performed the exam and also took some measurements. Our baby was pronounced very healthy and was already trying to do some head lifts on the exam table! When the five-minute exam was finished, I put baby back into the den, and Bai was reunited with her cub. Bai very calmly picked baby up and rested. I have to say this was one of our best first exams on a cub: baby did not cry and Bai was not stressed. I am sure by now you are all wringing your hands as to what the sex is. I saved the best part for last! Our fifth baby panda is…A BOY! Kathy Hawk is a senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo.

Thanks for the panda cub update Carole. After all those close-up zoom shots of the cub when he was on his back, I think everyone watching already knew he was a boy

![]() Something special for Labor Day Weekend...SoCal Style.. Three - Milk Cake Pastel De Tres Leches! The historic restaurant Fonda El Pato in Mexico City was famous for this version of Pastel De Tres Leches! ingredients: * 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour * 1 teaspoon baking powder * 1/2 teaspoon sea salt * 6 eggs * 1 cup of sugar * 1/4 cup water * 3 teaspoons Mexican vanilla extract * 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk * 1 13-ounce can evaporated milk * 3 cups heavy cream * fresh mangos, strawberries, peaches, or other fruit, sliced cooking instructions: 1. spray the bottom and sides of a 9-by-3-inch springform pan with vegetable cooking spray and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside 2. combine eggs and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat on high until doubled in volume, about 5 minutes. Reduce speed to low; add the water and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla. Mix well. On very low speed or by hand using a long spatula, gently fold dry ingredients into the batter. 3. pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the cake is firm on top and pulled away from the sides of the pan. Remove from oven and place pan on a rack to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Turn the cake out on a serving platter, place a cake plate over the cake, and turn it right side up. Set aside to continue cooling. 4. while the cake is cooling, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, the evaporated milk, the remaining 2 teaspoons vanilla, and 1 cup of the heavy cream. set aside 5. using a serrated knife, gently slice off the top skin of the cake and discard. Prick the cake all over with a long toothpick. ( This will allow the cake to soak up the milk mixture ) Pour milk mixture over the cake in several batches, allowing it to soak in as much as possible each time. refidgerate 6. when ready to serve, pour the remaining 2 cups heavy cream into a chilled bowl and beat with chilled beaters until stiff peaks form. Pipe or spread the whipped cream on the top and sides of the cake and garnish with fresh fruit slices. Serves 8 to 12.

California Objects to 'Got Breastmilk?' Stickers By ELIZABETH BANICKI ![]() LOS ANGELES (CN) - California claims the Texas Sticker Company swiped its "Got Milk?" trademark to make "Got Breastmilk?" stickers, which the for-profit company offers in interstate commerce. The commissioner of the California Department of Food and Agriculture says the California Milk Processor Board created the "Got Milk?" campaign and trademark, and the sticker company is diluting it and creating confusion. The sticker company is a for-profit organization. Its Web site states, "Sorry, we cannot duplicate any registered or trademarked logos," California says in its federal complaint. The Milk Board's "Got Milk?" campaign has been so popular it was quickly licensed to numerous retailers nationwide - but not to the Texas Sticker Company. The sticker company and its general operators, Dana and Jerry Chambliss, have no business selling the stickers, especially to Californians, the state claims. California alleges false designation of origin, and trademark infringement and dilution. It wants Texas Sticker enjoined from using the logo and ordered to destroy or surrender all the stickers bearing the breastmilk phrase |
