Carole, I enjoy the zoo pictures each day. You are going to get tired of me commenting on the polar bears, but just look at that guy on the right! :D

Topa, lovely moon photo. We had a very clear, full moon here last night, too, with Venus (I think) right beside the moon shining brightly. No beautiful photos like you have though.

Jill, just watched the aquarium video that you posted yesterday. I watched it full screen and turned the sound up. Just wish I could see it in real life. Thank you for that link.

Topa - Beautiful moon. <3

Cheryl - I never get tired of you commenting on the polar bears, as you previously said, he is such a "ham" and so entertaining.

Jill - Loved the aquarium video, so peaceful and beautiful.

<::: Bald Eagle Release on Labor Day

The Wildlife Center of Virginia, will release a Bald Eagle on Monday, September 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Westover Plantation, on the James River in Charles City County. Participating in the release will be Ed Clark, President and Co-Founder of the Wildlife Center.

This release is open to the public. Individuals interested in attending are asked to RSVP by email to wildlife@wildlifecenter.org or by calling 540.942.9453.

This juvenile Bald Eagle – hatched earlier this year – was first spotted in early July on the ground near Doughtery, Accomack County, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The young eagle could not fly; it was being fed by an adult eagle, but after several days the adult was gone. The young eagle was rescued and stabilized by wildlife rehabilitator Kathy Cummings, with assistance from the Eastern Shore Animal Hospital.

On July 16, the eagle was taken to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, with transport provided by volunteers Barbara Monaghan and Mike Fowler. Upon admission, the eagle received a complete examination. The Center’s veterinary team, led by Dr. Elizabeth Daut, found old fractures in the bird’s left metacarpal bones – fractures likely sustained in the nest that had started to heal. 162_6287

The Wildlife Center gave this eagle a “second chance” – providing medical treatment, food, shelter, and the support and time it needed to heal. The Center’s rehabilitation staff has been exercising the bird in the Center’s largest outdoor flight pen to build up its stamina, and the eagle has demonstrated that it is ready for return to the wild.

The eagle will be released at Westover, across the James River from a National Wildlife Refuge. The 4,200-acre refuge was created in 1991 and hosts one of the largest eagle roosts on the East Coast.

The eagle to be released on Monday is one of the 32 Bald Eagles admitted to the Wildlife Center thus far in 2009. The all-time record for eagle admissions was set in 2007, when the Center admitted a total of 36 Bald Eagles.

<::: Update On Buddy

Posted Image Posted Image

Eagle #08-0887 seems to be adjusting well to his new pen. He seems to be particularly fond of a new high perch that’s been installed, giving him the ability to peer into the pens of his neighbors. He continues to eat well; no additional beak-trimming is necessary at this point.

#08-0887’s neighbor to the north is Junior, a Golden Eagle. His neighbor to the south is Scarlette, a Red-tailed Hawk. Both are long-time residents of the Wildlife Center.

Meet his neighbors

I just read last nights posts and saw KLJinUSA made a post.
I didn't know Rusty broke his leg
and that is why Karen hasn't been able to chat with us.
I hope Rusty heals quickly, what a bummer to have to be on crutches!
