The Station Fire has been ruled an Arson :8O: which means the two fire fighters who were killed are now deemed to be homicides :'( :'(

The search is on for the culprits :o

Injured Osprey reunited with fellow birds

Birds of a feather: Recuperated animal returns to the wild

Ozzy the osprey cautiously assesses her surroundings as she prepared to be released back into the wild at the Gabriola ferry dock Monday. Pictured is Ozzy coming out of her crate while one of her rescuers, Lorrine Anderson from Cedar's Wildaid, looks on.

By Robert Barron, Daily News August 25, 2009

Ferry passengers waiting to travel from Nanaimo to Gabriola Island on Monday morning were treated to rare close encounter with a large bird of prey.

A young osprey, affectionately known as "Ozzy," was rescued by crew members on the MV Quinsam when they stepped in to save the fledgling raptor after it was attacked in mid-air by a bald eagle on Aug. 2 during what may have been its maiden flight.

After spending the past three weeks recuperating from the incident at a facility in Delta, Ozzy was released in the ferry parking lot on Monday morning by Lorinne Anderson from Cedar's Wildaid and was almost immediately joined in flight by a larger pair of ospreys. Anderson speculated they may have been Ozzy's parents.

"It was really neat to see Ozzy reunited with the other ospreys and it would be something if they were actually her parents," said Quinsam crew member Don Wardill, who was instrumental in rescuing the raptor after it fell from the sky and onto the ferry deck during morning safety exercises.

"The fact that they were still around weeks after Ozzy disappeared is amazing. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I'm glad the crew could help out."

The story began early on Aug. 2 when the osprey appeared on the Quinsam's deck with three bloody puncture wounds on its chest area at the same time a bald eagle was spotted flying low overhead.

Wardill and other crew members were able to capture the osprey, which was docile at the time due to shock from the incident.

They called Anderson, whose volunteer organization rescues wild animals in distress.

Anderson took the injured bird to West Coast Air, which transported Ozzy free of charge to Delta's Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society to heal and recuperate.

Fortunately, none of the three puncture wounds hit any of Ozzy's vital organs and she healed quickly on a diet of trout and goldfish and the society transported the raptor back to Nanaimo by helicopter Monday to be released back into the wild in an attempt to reunite the bird with its parents.

"She's healthy and well-fed, so that she should be OK even if she didn't reunite with her family, but we're hoping it was her parents that she flew away with Monday," Anderson said.

"It was just by sheer chance that the eagle dropped Ozzy right onto the ferry deck where it could be rescued because it could have hit water and been attacked again by the eagle. The bird should buy lottery tickets."
