Here is an account posted on Sunday August 2nd by wildorcaimages of how she went to the pick up the injured osprey to transport it to O.W.L. where it was rehabilitated before it's release.... "I was having my shower this morning at around 7.40 am when the phone rang, and it was Bev. She asked me if I was able to drive to Terminal 2 of the Vancouver Airport and pick up a Goshawk that was coming in with Westcoast Air in 10 min..... .... I grabbed a couple of towels, my larger cat carrier, my falconry glove and my thin little barn owl gloves, which is all I have at home. Got lost at first because Westcoast Air is actually at the Floatplane terminal. There the kennel with the bird was waiting right in the little check in hall. The lady of WildArc needed it back so I had to transfer the bird. Something didn't look right about this bird being a Goshawk, but I never thought much of it.... but just thought of the task at hand. How to transfer the bird safely, for both of us. I went into the washroom, as it was a smaller space and if it got out it wouldn't go far. When I opened the door, red eyes looked at me and a black beak was gleaming. I quickly shielded my face with my falconry glove on the left hand and grabbed white legs with black talons with my right. The bird was very cooperative.... but it was tough to get those huge wings tucked in safely in the small cat kennel it was in, but I managed and got the transfer done in about 20 seconds. Came out of the washroom, let the people have a quick peak and went to the car. As I was driving along, it occured to me, what had been blatantly obvious but I just hadn't thought about...... the bird is a female young Osprey, not a Goshawk. I phoned Bev and let her know. Got the bird to O.W.L. got to hold it during its examination.......an eagle had tried to make it a meal, it has puncture wounds in his neck and chest area, so it was put on Antibiotics right away and put in a clean cage with a large trout." |

Love the "Support Group" T-shirt, Topa, and how true it is. Great photo of your charming and excited grandchildren at LAX, I think you must be saving up your pennies already so you can fly to Israel. Penny, great story with a happy ending for the osprey in Nanaimo. How fortunate that she was released right when some adults were nearby to adopt her, possibly even her parents. Just saw a segment on the news about the Snow Leopard cub being shown to the public for the first time at the zoo in Tokyo. It has beautiful blue eyes and the longest tail ..... Cat, I enjoyed the elephant story and the photo of the baby. The next generation ... Have a safe trip, Carole, and enjoy your visit. |

" Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you love to do, in order to have what you want." Margaret Young |

I had to go out for an appointment and missed the whooper chicks being led back to the pen. While they were gone the runway grass was being mowed. Pilots Chris and Joe were in the pen setting up the dividing net. Soon they will bring the Cohort 2 group over to this pen. The two cohorts will be kept separate by the net until they get used to each other, then they will be combined. Eventually this larger group will be combined with the oldest whooper chicks in Cohort 1 (safety in numbers - the combined cohorts 2 and 3 will outnumber the bigger chicks in cohort 1). According to their website, if all goes well, tomorrow morning will be "Moving Day" for Cohort 2. ![]() |

Before I forget, the new space series that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago is on tonight at 10 pm on our Canadian channel. It is called "Defying Gravity". Last week it was on the American channel on Sunday night, so I'm not sure if it will be on for my American friends tonight or not. Just thought that I'd post a little reminder. |

Flying with little ones can be a nightmare for everyone on the plane. The Pressure build up sometimes in incredible. I too have trouble if the Pilot descends to quickly. There is nothing worse then ear aches. I pinch my nose while trying to blow out my nose, swallowing hard in another but a little one can't do these, so the best thing is a bottle to keep them swallowing. |

One thing that never fails is a good spray of Dristan Long Lasting antihistamine in each nostril about 30 minurtes before flying...it will keep the ear canal open and I absolutely never fail to do this if I even have a hint of a stuffed up nose. Those ear aches are excruciating if you happen to have a cold. This remedy always works for me
