I started the long weekend by watching a documentary on Luna the orphaned killer whale on CBC. Husband and wife team Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm went to the village of Gold River in the spring of 2004 for three weeks. The short version of what happened there is this: like the thief who came to steal the money, they both fell in love with the subject of this story, and didn't leave. They stayed for three years. ![]() Click image for promo clip The Story of Saving Luna It is beautiful and sad at the same time

The Station Fire, named because of its proximity to a nearby USFS Ranger Station has burned over 242 square miles of land within the Angeles National Forest and near surrounding foothill communities of La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Acton, Soledad Canyon, Pasadena, Glendale and Sierra Madre. The reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual/s responsible for setting it is now $100,000. Image credit: EPA/MICHAL CZERWONKA Fire crews work to contain the Station fire, burning in the San Gabriel Canyon, just outside Pasadena, California, USA, 03 September 2009. The Station Fire has burned over 150,000 acres, destroyed 64 homes, and is now 42 per cent contained. For more detailed info go to InciWeb |

On a much happier note.... Another Unsung Hero ![]() Grace Belcuore, the founder of California Equine Retirement Foundation (CERF), was first and foremost a racing fan. So when the legendary gelding John Henry went off into a ballyhooed retirement at the advanced age of 10, Grace's mind went racing to the sport's other aging veterans. What, the former school teacher wondered, happens to all those lesser-known, yet equally gallant, old geldings when their racing days are done? Thus was born CERF, first incorporated in September of 1986 and later granted tax-exempt status in May of 1987. The foundation's goal was a relatively simple one — give former racehorses a happy place to retire, — or help them find a new job and new life. Making that basic thought work has been the challenge for Grace and the people who have joined her noble cause. Go here for more info on CERF |
