Terrific WCrane and Panda pics today. That is a LONG tongue~ No Labor here in Oz, meetings in the City today. Tummy still not 100%, and the cats started howling @3am to go out. I finally let them out at @5am, tried to go back to sleep. sigh. Big but brief storm last night, will be fresh and clean today!

we're back from our day out and about! have lots of photos and saw juvie osprey crying out to nearby parent to "feed me" - didn't happen while we were there LOL we did see parent go for a fishie but missed oh well - next time! visited a landfill turned into a wonderful park!Norman J. Levy Overlook Park and Preserve This unique park, once a landfill, has been transformed into an environmental treasure. The conversion of the former Merrick Landfill into the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve not only epitomizes the town's commitment to environmental conservation, but saved Hempstead Town taxpayers more than $42 million. The innovative $15 million park plan is substantially less expensive than the $57 million capping and closure plan originally required of the town by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Located beside the Meadowbrook a fresh water stream enters into Merrick Bay. The park has a windmill that circulates water of two man made ponds at the top of the 150 foot hill that made up the landfill. The top of the hill has been planted with wild flowers such as Cone Flowers. The hill overlooks the bay and marshes and offers a spectacular view of the South Shore Estuary. Several miles of trails and a 500 foot fishing pier offer good bird watching. The park provides a jitney to transport physically challenged and elderly visitors upon request. Wading birds can be seen on the salt marsh. Waterfowl use the bay and can be seen from the fishing pier. Barn owl hunt over the park around dusk. Usually seen coming out of the nearby refuse transfer station. This is also a good spot to see Osprey. Look for many American Goldfinch on the wildflower seed heads in late summer and fall. |
