eaglepedia revisited

Prey Requirements - A bald eagle must maintain a certain level of energy and body weight to function effectively, especially for hunting! Compared to the red meat of mammals (deer, raccoon, skunk and possum) fish are poor food sources. However, fish are more likely to be available. If an eagle eats only fish it would need to consume from 6 – 11% of its body weight (anywhere from 1 to 1.5 pounds of fish a day). If it fed on a higher quality of food, like carrion or small mammals, it would need only about 6% of its body weight each day. Weather (air temperature) and the amount of energy expended in locating food also affects how much food a bird needs. Eagles can go without food for several days.

I still have these if you didn't get one first time around - send me an EM if you are interested in purchasing one or two - they were printed and donated to IWS so that all monies raised could go directly to the eagles!

The Dalai Lama, right, meets the Irwin family, from left, Terri, Bob and Bindi, with a koala, at Australia Zoo in Beerwah. The Dalai Lama spoke on animal rights at the zoo built by "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin.

Whooper Update: Yesterday cohorts two and three were trained separately. When the pilot returned with the second group the other cohort was let back out on the runway to mingle. This is a very important step in the socializing process. I saw one chick challenge one of the costumed handlers by jumping higher than him/her and putting its clawed feet out at them. At the second attempt the handler just calmly walked towards the chick with the puppet arm held high, to assert their dominance. The chicks otherwise were busy looking for treats and seemed to get along fine. From what I could tell they were separated back into their two cohorts and returned to the pen in their separate enclosures. It didn't look like it was time yet to put them all together inside the pen.

Cohort one remains at the other site (no webcam there) and is doing especially well in their flight training. The good weather has really made a difference in the progress of all the chicks, allowing the ultralights to train with them most days.

Cute Whooper story Cheryl :)^

I like the imagery of the pseudo adult walking towards the contrary one with the arm up to put it in its place. I think Ozzie might say 'Good on ya' :P
