Penny - At the Atlanta Zoo, Lun Lun started taking Xi Lan/Squish into another den also. Perhaps that is where the bamboo is and she doesn't want to leave him alone for a long time while eating. It's not uncommon once the cub has reached a certain age. The great thing about the Atlanta zoo was that each den had a camera and you never missed a thing. |

I just got this photo but not sure if it is Bai Yun walking out of another den. I'm sure the zookeepers are keeping a watchful eye on Squiggles.![]() What a fabulous photo of Bai and Squigs, thanks Penny. |

Carole Bai was in and out of the den sooo many times in a short period earlier today...Cubbie may also have been removed for an exam and maybe she just decided to take him with her when she went to eat, especially if he was 'squeeking' ![]() They are both back in the den now but she was gone with him for at least an hour !!!! |

Panda Cub's Second Exam Baiby Boy ![]() Click on Image for lots more fom San Diego Zoo Today was our newest panda cub’s second exam. This was my first time holding a panda cub, and he was much bigger than I expected! I carried him out from the den and handed him over to the two vets to examine. The baby gained nearly a pound this week: signs of a very healthy cub. After taking measurements and receiving a checkup by the vets, it was time to put him back. I quietly laid him in the bamboo covering the floor of the den and closed the bedroom door. Mother Bai stayed calm during the exam, munching on bamboo and biscuits. But as soon as she was given access to the bedroom, she returned to the den to check on her baby. She is such a good mom! It’s fun watching the new cub grow up, and I can’t wait to see how big he is next week! Holly Border is a keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Note: The panda cub weighed 3.9 pounds today. Video will be posted soon.

Penny - I read the cub check-up report earlier and couldn't wipe the smile off my face. What a little cutie and what a butterball he is. Bai is such a good Mom, almost human the way she holds him. I am wiped out. For the past 2 weeks I have been cooking and freezing for Rosh Hashanah. We are having about 8 the first night but 18 the second night. I make everything from scratch so anything that could be frozen is done and over with, even the baking. Next week will be the rest of the food so will start on Wednesday. I really like the cooking part but hate the clean-up. My huge freezer in the basement is almost full so it's a good feeling that most is done. Every grandkid puts in their order for what they want and grandma gives them exactly what they want.

Braveheart is now 14 weeks old, and she is still hanging around the nest. She hatched a bit late this year, so it’s not surprising that she would take a little longer to strike out on migration. We’re not sure if the father osprey is still around, but it does look like Braveheart is on her own a lot, which isn’t bad since it will force her to become more independent and will eventually encourage her to start the journey south. Pretty Braveheart.......... We'll be keeping the Osprey Cam Gallery open and the Osprey Cam online throughout the fall and winter, since we expect to see bald eagles on the cam platform once our osprey family leaves town. http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm.html |
