Just talked to a lady from the athletic club who is a dog lover. She said PetPac is a better site for domestic animal lovers than Peta. Here is the link if you'd like to check it out. http://www.petpac.net/ |

Hello, everybody. Lots of greetings to bring a smile to my face ..... Topa's beautiful picture of Prisoner's Harbor, the hummingbird poop shot and the polar bear eating his veggies (what big paws you have, my dear) .I just woke up, seriously 11 am. Think I am worn out from all the hubbub around here. We did watch "Defying Gravity" last night on the Canadian channel. I think it will be on the American channels on Sunday evening. It was another terrific show, if you like space-themed shows.

Whooper Update: The chicks had their health checks a few days ago. The veterinary staff people who handle them wear grey costumes (I was thinking that must make them look more like sandhill cranes) so that the young birds do not associate their white-costumed "parents" with stress. The chicks are checked for parasites, given a microchip ID in their neck, a transmitter is attached to one leg, and a blood sample is drawn, plus their size and weight are recorded. Unfortunately something sad happened and I will share it in Joe Duff's words: "But birds aren’t like mammals. They don’t take well to petting or being held, and it takes great skill to hold a bird properly. Even the experienced handlers who volunteer to assist during the health checks have problems sometimes. Larger birds struggle more and can hurt themselves. Number 922 was like that. The bird struggled mightily soon after being picked up. The handling technique was standard for young Whooping cranes and properly applied, but before the exam had begun, a “pop” was heard and the bird ended up lame on the left leg. The bird was transported to ICF for x-rays and assessment. Before surgery could be performed the bird suffered cardiopulmonary arrest and could not be resuscitated." Here are a couple of photos of the health checks being performed. ![]() RIP #922 Thank you for sharing your beauty with us even for a short while. I am so sorry we have lost you.

Penny, the SD Zoo certainly has a nice, soft nest area for the pandas compared to the bare floor in Atlanta. |

Cheryl I mentioned that when Baiby was born...if you compare the two videos from the births, Xi Lan was really squawking LOUD after landing on that concrete floor in Zoo Atlanta...I don't know why they don't section off a special cosy den like SD Zoo has for the panda Mom's
