Eaglepedia Revisited - May 27, 2008

And just what will the young ealges do for their first several weeks of life? Everything is new and interesting so they will be learning and watching. They will learn eagle behavior from their parents - what foods to eat, how to catch their food, what vocalizations and expressions mean to each other and to other species of wildlife. They will learn what predators are and where they fit into the food chain. They will learn how to fly, how to lift off and how to land, how to turn and what they can do with their talons. They will exercise their wings, they will preen their feathers. And occasionally, they will have little tiffs with their siblings in the nest.

We assume they have some way of identifying each other. It could be through vocalizations.

Name a Ring-tailed Lemur!
Have you ever laid in bed at night wondering if somewhere else on Earth, a little Ring-tailed Lemur shares the exact same name as you? Or perhaps you have been searching for the perfect birthday gift for that hard to buy for Ring-tailed Lemur obsessive in your life. Well the search is over. Now you can bid on the opportunity to name not one, but both of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust's new little lemur twins! Born back in April, it's about time the little tykes got proper names. In addition to selecting the names, the winning bidder will also get to meet the lemurs as well as their keepers. All proceeds go to benefit Durrell's conservation work.

I linked IWS Eagle Forum home page in Facebook.
Maybe we can find some newbies to chat with us.

OK, going for my walk. it's getting hot again. Finally.
I think this is the coolest summer on record.

The wedding is mostly outside so I have extra umbrellas and heaters on hold.
I'm not sure which way it will go. :D

Hello, everybody!

Kibbled, got them both wrong, oh well.

Thanks for posting the photos of the osprey chicks, Carole. I liked the names that were chosen for them.

Penny, the cello certainly has a history and a personality. She'll enjoy her spa treatment after her final performances in the heat. I'm glad Jo the bear wasn't hurt by the truck.

Topa, sending good thoughts your way for a beautiful, sunny day for the wedding. The picture of Barry with his mother is really nice. She looks great! :)^ :)^

I hope Deb, ES and the scouts get good weather, too. The weather here has been perfect for the farmers. The crops are around two weeks ahead of schedule.

DH has finished painting the kitchen, hurray! He did an excellent job removing all the wallpaper, fixing up and sanding the walls, painting the ceiling and then the walls, and he never complained. Now it's my turn with the clean-up. I've been trying to keep things tidy but it's time to go over everything thoroughly and get rid of all the final bits of dust from the sanding, wash the floor and the fronts of the cupboards plus wash and iron the curtains. I've ordered the light for over the table so I hope it comes this week. We moved the watercolour picture of the Eiffel tower to the kitchen instead of the front hall (I posted it awhile ago). I had a Tricia Romance picture on that particular wall but it is about 29 years old and has faded even though it wasn't in direct light. Then on a smaller wall we combined my crane picture that we found in Alaska .... it's sandhill cranes but I just liked the dancing. Ian gave me a plate with two sandhills and one whooper on it for Christmas back in 2006. I put them together on one wall and that's it .... no more stuff on the walls. I had to put Ian's plate up because he was so proud of finding it on E-Bay for me.

P.S. Why can't builders put switches in the centre of the wall? I missed that when the house was being built. Plus I remember the guy did all the switches in beige even though all the trim was white. Ian was only a baby when all of it was being done and we missed catching every little thing. Gradually Robert changed the base of the plugs and switches to white ones over the years. But that switch is looking unbalanced because we centred the picture on the wall. Oh, well.

Whooper Update: Some of the chicks are able to fly short distances now. A group of them actually over-flew the netted pen and landed in the marsh. They had to be lured back onto the runway with the vocalizers and the flapping of costumed arms.

Here is a photo of W1-10 with its parents, #9-03 (mom with the chick) and #3-04 (dad on the right).
