Subject: We win a big one for polar bears

VICTORY!

Posted Image
Dear Cruzer's,

I have great news: a federal court has just halted oil and gas companies from moving ahead with drilling operations in millions of acres spanning Alaska’s Chukchi Sea -- one of our nation’s two “Polar Bear Seas.”

The ruling is a huge victory for polar bears, bowhead whales, other Arctic wildlife and tens of thousands of NRDC supporters like you who enabled us to go to court and fight off Big Oil’s planned invasion of this sensitive habitat.

The massive fire sale of drilling rights in the Chukchi Sea was initiated by the Bush Administration in its final days. In effect, the Bush Interior Department sold the home of half our nation’s polar bears right out from under their feet and sparked a modern-day oil rush into the heart of the bear’s melting sea ice habitat.

NRDC counterattacked by launching a federal lawsuit -- in partnership with Earthjustice, Alaska Native groups and other conservationists. We charged that the government had failed to study the far-reaching impacts of oil development, had broken our nation’s environmental law and should be ordered to revoke the drilling rights.

A federal judge has now agreed! And he has told the Obama Administration -- which adopted the Bush Administration’s reckless drilling policy -- to go back to the drawing board and gather the missing information about environmental risks.

We would hope that the Obama Administration takes this opportunity to break with the “drill everywhere” policy of the Bush era and embark on a more science-based approach to protecting America’s endangered Arctic.

In the wake of the Gulf oil spill disaster, it is all too clear that a spill in the Arctic could be catastrophic for polar bears and other wildlife.
The oil industry has no technology for cleaning up oil in broken sea ice -- one of the main places where polar bears search for food. And oil-covered polar bears have almost no chance of survival.

With Alaska’s polar bears already facing extinction by 2050 from global warming, they can hardly afford a new threat to their meager numbers.

That’s why our latest court victory is so important. And it’s also why we must now redouble our efforts to turn back Big Oil’s dangerous plans to drill in other vulnerable corners of the Arctic.

First and foremost, we are still waging our legal fight to stop the Shell oil company from drilling off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Beaufort Sea -- the second of the two Polar Bear Seas.

We will continue fighting Shell and any other company that targets the polar bear’s home for potentially disastrous drilling.

In the meantime, I want to thank you for helping NRDC score this latest victory over Big Oil in federal court -- and for defending the Polar Bear Seas.

Sincerely,

Peter Lehner

LACONIA, N.H.

A black bear walked into a New Hampshire house through an open door, ate two pears and a bunch of grapes, took a drink from the family fishbowl and grabbed a stuffed bear on its way out the door.

Mary Beth Parkinson said the bear apparently took advantage of the open outside door to get into her kitchen Tuesday in Laconia, about 20 miles north of Concord. She thinks the garage door going up scared the bear enough that it fled the house.

She said she arrived in time to save the fish.

Parkinson said her 6- and 9-year-old boys made sure the doors were locked before they went to bed.

I bet he'd rather have fresh Alaskan salmon anyway :P

rofl About the Bear thief.

Great news about the Polar Bears!

Tallycat :Hugs:

REgan your photos are FANTASTIC (even if you did mention a lot of rain and look cold!)

We already knew this!

A life of booze, fags and slothfulness may be enough to earn your doctor's disapproval, but there is one last hope: a repeat prescription of mates and good conversation.

A circle of close friends and strong family ties can boost a person's health more than exercise, losing weight or quitting cigarettes and alcohol, psychologists say.

Sociable people seem to reap extra rewards from their relationships by feeling less stressed, taking better care of themselves and having less risky lifestyles than those who are more isolated, they claim.

A review of studies into the impact of relationships on health found that people had a 50 per cent better survival rate if they belonged to a wider social group, be it friends, neighbours, relatives or a mix of these.

The striking impact of social connections on wellbeing has led researchers to call on GPs and health officials to take loneliness as seriously as other health risks, such as alcoholism and smoking.

I'm sorry I've had no chance to check in or be here to visit. :( Ed was in the ER again all day Monday; 8 hours and almost admitted but the doctor decided it would be okay to send him home after all. He's having the dreaded "oscopies" next week now after seeing his GI doc today, and hopefully they will tell them something. The doc didn't want to press for it this week when he'd had such a bad episode AND they discovered in a new CT scan that his appendix is "dialated" and twice the size it was a month ago, which could be from the inflammation or it may be getting ready to "go bad". :8O: I feel like I'm getting ready to "go bad", too. :hair: I'm mad with worry and anxiety and almost as afraid as he is at his having them. Wish I had more uplifting news to share. There were a couple of tiny bright spots but barely enough to note. The best was that the sore tooth I've had and been worrying about (crowned and root canaled so shouldn't hurt) turns out is only from grinding or clenching my teeth in my sleep and even in the daytime unconsciously I've noticed, and the dentist will sell me a Night Guard for $500, or maybe I try an over the counter one for $30 or $40?

Well, enough of that.

Topa I'm so excited for Rachel, her future DH, you and DH and your whole family's big event this week! :**: Something wonderful to think about. <3 I saw that your DS flew in and I can't wait to see and hear all about it as soon as you come back down to Earth.

I feel so bad to have missed a few birthdays and many things to comment on, like Carole still :X: that your ears heal without the tubes, and Cheryl the Whooper sitting in yellow flowers was so lovely  , and Regan what an amazing vacation! :clk: :)^ Wish I were there...

Once again I exceeded Emoticon allowances so this isn't all I meant to emote. ;-)

Update July 28, 2010 - 9:29 PM CDT

All Is Well

Hope looking grown up! (photo July 27, 2010)

We get a little nervous when everything seems to be going okay. What are we missing? Today was one of those days. Lily and Hope and the other research bears were okay.

Lily's fans are streaming into Ely for the Lilypad Picnic, the Lilypad Committee is making final arrangements, and the media is calling for updates on the picnic arrangements to include in their TV newscasts this evening.

The North American Bear Center's 'Miracle Team' is working to be ready for the event.

The Lily and Hope Exhibit is coming together, aided by the donation of a beautiful album that tells the whole story of Lily and Hope in pictures and by the completion of four videos of Lily and Hope in the den – from labor and delivery thru emergence in late winter.

Meanwhile, the international participants in the just-completed Black Bear Field Study course left after an amazing time observing wild bears in action.

The education outreach participants are continuing to organize to follow through on the many ideas coming in from a growing number of teachers and outdoor educators.

And Lily's Fans perked up the Bear Center staff with a goodie basket and an ice cream cake in a continuing conspiracy to fatten the staff and heighten the anticipation of their visits to the Bear Center. Even the weather cooperated with a beautiful day.

Is it okay for everything go this well? We think so!

Thank you for everything you have done and are doing to help.
