We woke up yesterday morning and the temperature in the house was 65. Air conditioning wouldn't shut off. Finally I got it to shut down. Same thing this morning but it wouldn't shut off so I went to the electrical panel and flipped the switch. House is 64 now, freezing and I am waiting for the repairman to come. I think we may need a new thermostat. The repair company laughed, they said everyone wanted service as their house was hot, never heard of one that was so cold.

We woke up today and the temperature outside is 53 . Brrr, the newspaper said it will in the 90s later today. Circle, You are an angel. Regan, I love your Alaska photo's and you look great in red! Yesterday DD was offered a 5th grade teaching job at a private school in a very exclusive area, Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara . She decided to send her resume out everywhere in Ventura & Santa Barbara county, feeling very very insecure she would even find a job teaching anywhere. There are so many applicants the interview process goes on for weeks. The head master offered Rachel the job saying she was a seamless fit. Today she is going over the package with the headmaster. She's not thrilled with the job offer, private schools pay less than public, but the benefits are suppose to be great. And they have been so very nice to her, calling her several times throughout the interview process to let her know she was in the top picks. I think they knew she was right for the job immediately. The school is call Laguna Blanca and here's the link. http://www.lagunablanca.org/home.php Today I'm getting nails done and taking DS shopping at Best Buy, he's buying a new lap top. I really wish he would stay in the states, it's such a joy having him here. But that will never happen. I said he should at least stay a summer next year with his family so he can fundraise in LA. Beautiful photo of Hope. Ok, Going for my beauty walk. C U

Topa - What wonderful news of Rachel getting a teaching offer. As long as the benefits are good, that's what counts. The academic standards at the school sound high which is great. With so many applicants they chose the best one! I noticed on the website that the mascot of the school is an owl, perhaps Rachel could change that to an eagle, just kidding. Please wish her well in her new career, so many good things in her life now. . Have fun shopping with Daniel, I hope he and his family spend next summer with you . Enjoy your manicure, I had one yesterday and loved every minute of it, so relaxing.

More fallout from the oil disaster Loon among Canadian birds threatened by Gulf spill ![]() Workers prepare to clean a loon covered in oil sheen. Image by Lyle Ratliff By Lesley Ciarula Taylor for The Star Canada's iconic loon is among up to 60 species of Canadian migratory birds that are in danger of being trapped in the toxic net of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, bird experts say. "The Gulf is at the crossroads of the Americas for migrating birds," Ted Cheskey of Nature Canada told the Star on Tuesday. "Several species are going to take huge hits. The reality is that birds seem not to be able to avoid it really well." The southern migration of dozens of Canadian bird species begins in July. The once-fertile wetlands of the Gulf are the "gas station" stop along the way for the millions of birds en route to Latin America, said Cheskey. For others, the Gulf itself is their winter haven. Loons, pelicans, ducks, geese, cormorants, gannets, herons and grebes are among the many species that could get sucked into the spill vortex during their migrations. "No one wants to contemplate a time when a visit to their favourite lake will be saddened by the silence of the loons," said Carrol Henderson, non-game wildlife program supervisor of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The loon is the state bird of Minnesota. "For some of these birds, it will be a one-way trip" because of the oil or the lack of food, said Henderson. "Some of the shore birds have started their migration south," he said. "A number are used to spending months and months feeding along the Gulf coast to get the energy to keep flying south." Even if they survive the journey south and back, their depleted energy and exposure to oil could damage their reproductive cycles when they return to Canada in the spring, said Cheskey. "The impact of this will last years." Read More.....Canadian Birds Threatened |

When this was first reported they said it was a black bear Grizzly, 2 cubs caught after Montana mauling COOKE CITY, Mont. - A female grizzly bear suspected of killing one person and injuring two others during a late-night rampage through a campground near Yellowstone National Park has been captured, wildlife officials said Thursday. The grizzly, estimated to weigh 300 to 400 pounds, was lured into a trap fashioned from culvert pipe Wednesday evening, then left in place to attract her year-old offspring. By Thursday morning, two of her cubs had been caught and the third could be heard nearby, calling out to its mother. Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Capt. Sam Sheppard said he was confident they had captured the killer bear because it came back to the same site where the man was killed early Wednesday. Sheppard described the rampage - in which campers in three different tents were mauled as they slept - as a highly unusual predatory attack. "She basically targeted the three people and went after them," Sheppard said. "It was like an archery hunter who gets between a sow and her cubs and she responds to protect them." Officials have said the sow will be killed. State and federal wildlife officials will determine the fate of the cubs. Sheppard said they are unlikely to be returned to the wild. Penny - Last night Jack Hanna was on the Larry King show and told of his recent experience of being faced with 3 grizzly bears. He also spoke of the tragedy of the person who died because of the bear attack. Here is the link to his video....... http://larrykinglive.blogs.cnn.com/ |

That is quite a story Jack Hanna told Carole Grizzly Sow with her cubs Every year in BC there are people who are killed by Grizzly's. Everyone who is hiking or working outdoors in bear habitat should be carrying that spray. In Manitoba bear spray is a popular weapon with the 'criminal' element which has necessitated the stricter control of the sales of this product. I personally know of a US family who was bringing some into Canada on their camping vacation and had it confiscated by the border guards. My nephew carried it with him when he was hitch-hiking just in case. He wanted it more for protection against aggressive human(s) though Luckily he never had to use it.

G'day Peeps, I'm sure Rachel will enjoy working at that school Cathy, it looks wonderful. Sometimes lesser pay makes up with a great job. And if the school mascot is an Owl, she perhaps should have a talk to TrishE about the Owls she helps out with! Only a few more days for the wedding, HOW EXCITING! My Friday, clear but not for long according to the weatherpeople...... kinda soaked.. enough already! Terrible story about the bears, how frightening! My Rachel came home last night after her work (to 9pm) for dinner, made one of her favs, chicken burritos. Rex dropped by too. Kitties got lots of hugs and she asked to use the shower (hates the one at the dorm! )

I'm sorry they found the Bear. It seems the offending animal is always hunted down and killed no matter the circumstances when one "dares" to kill a human, usually one intruding on their territory. So sad when it's a mother Bear just protecting her Cubs. I caught the Storklings playing Peek-a-Boo earlier today. Can you spot the second one in this pic? ![]() So cute, one's preening the other. ![]() |
