Yun Zi's First Birthday Bash ![]() Posted at 4:44 pm August 5, 2010 by Matt Steele What’s up, blogosphere? My name’s Matt Steele, the new social media planner for the San Diego Zoo (which in my not-so-humble opinion is the gig of a lifetime!). As you probably already know, Yun Zi’s first birthday was today, and we’re excited to report that it was a huge success. Our little black-and-white birthday boy attracted a lot of attention. Aside from hundreds of guests eagerly waiting in line to get a look at our one-year-old ball of cute, Andrew Zimmern from the TV show Appetite for Life also dropped by to film an episode on Yun Zi’s first birthday. I was fortunate enough to tag along with Andrew and his crew as they took a brief detour to squirt down some rhinos, then stopped by our forage warehouse to help our staff add some finishing touches to Yun Zi’s spectacular ice birthday cake. After a crash course in bamboo-leaf bow making, Andrew realized arts and crafts aren’t his strong suit. At about noon, Andrew and his crew accompanied Yun Zi’s birthday cake over to the Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station, where Andrew assisted our staff in placing it in the exhibit and pouring some choice honey all over it for Yun Zi’s enjoyment. When Yun Zi and his mother, Bai Yun, were unleashed upon the exhibit, Bai Yun was the first to take advantage of the delicious treat therein, but Yun Zi quickly caught on and joined in the feast. Even when his mother took a break from chowing down, Yun Zi kept munching on the cake. I don’t think I’ve seen a happier panda. Yun Zi’s birthday was the third and final birthday of the week, but Panda Birthday Week isn’t over. The celebration will continue through the weekend with our very first tweet-up happening on Saturday and our foursquare Battle for the Mayor competition also wrapping up on Saturday. Don’t forget to post your panda pictures and panda poems on our facebook wall, or join our flickr group and share your favorite panda pictures with your fellow photography gurus. Check our Panda Birthday Week Community page for more information. See you this weekend, panda lovers! Matt Steele is the social media planner for the San Diego Zoo. Panda Birthday Videos |

Look what I just found..... Fat Burning Soup Recipe 2 - 16 ounce cans ready cut tomatoes 1 large onion, chopped 1 - 32 ounce can beef broth, fat free 1 package dry chicken noodle soup 1 bunch celery, sliced 1 pound carrots, sliced 2 - 16 ounce cans green beans 1 large green bell pepper 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Parsley - optional Curry powder - optional Salt - optional (I would not use any as there is enough in the canned tomatoes) Mix all recipe ingredients in a large stock pot. Bring fat burning soup recipe to a boil, then reduce heat and cook soup for 45 minutes. You can stay on this as long as you like. This soup can be eaten anytime you are hungry during the week, eat as much as you want. The more soup you eat the more weight you will lose. If you're going to be away from home, fill a thermos in the morning so you do not cheat. If you follow this plan as it is written and do not cheat, you will be amazed at how much weight you can safely lose. Not everyone will lose weight at the same rate, but you will feel fantastic. If you lose more than 17 pounds in four weeks, stay off the diet for five days and then start again. Always better to be safe and consult a physician before starting any diet. Day 1. Eat as much fat burning soup as you want. Eat any fruit except bananas. Cantaloupe and watermelons are lower in calories than most other kinds of fruit. Eat only soup and fruit today. Day 2. All veggies today. Eat until you are stuffed with fresh, raw, cooked or canned veggies. Eat veggies along with the fat burning soup today. At dinner tonight you can reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. Don't eat any fruit today. Day 3. Eat all the soup, fruit and veggies you want. If you have not cheated up till now you should have lost 2 - 4 pounds already. Day 4. Eat at least 3 bananas today and as much skim milk as you want. Eat these along with this fat burning soup recipe. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates. On this day your body will need potassium and carbohydrates. Proteins and calcium lessen the cravings for sweets. Day 5. You may have 10 to 20 ounces of beef today and a can of tomatoes, or as many as 6 tomatoes on this day; eat the fat burning soup at least once today. Day 6. Eat to your hearts content of the beef and veggies today. You can even have 2 - 3 steaks if you want today. Eat the soup at least once today. Day 7. Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juice and veggies, (stuff yourself), eat the soup at least once today; you can add cooked veggies to your rice today. DO NOT, NOT, NOT EAT ANY BREAD, ALCOHOL, CARBONATED DRINKS INCLUDING DIET DRINKS, AND ABSOLUTELY NO FRIED FOODS. |

Lily the Bear - Update August 5, 2010 - 7:58 PM CDT Introducing RC ![]() 11-year-old RC and one of her cubs - August 5, 2010 With Lily and Hope doing fine foraging together, we want to introduce 11-year-old RC and her cubs. RC is a daughter of wary 20-year-old Shadow and shares her appearance and traits. RC is ferocious toward bears that come near her cubs or encroach on her space. Her high-strung nature makes her less trusting than many bears and makes us hesitant to try putting a radio-collar on her. So, like Shadow, she doesn't wear one. We have made no effort to gain the trust of her 3 male cubs because they will likely disperse from the study area as yearlings after family break-up next year. The photo shows RC being wary, as usual, while her cub relaxes under her watchful protection. Similarly, Hope is more relaxed in the presence of Lily than she is alone. That's one of the reasons why we believe Hope will stick with Lily right into the den. Maybe we're becoming complacent, but Lily and Hope being together is becoming the norm..... One more thing, the Lilypad Picknicker who had the misfortune of hitting a bear in the study area through no fault of her own could do us one more favor. Could you contact info@bearstudy.org with your phone number and email? We wonder how big the bear was, which way it was going, etc. From the information she gave when she kindly reported it to the Bear Center, the accident was in Braveheart's territory, but Braveheart and her two female yearlings are all okay, so we need more information to figure out who might be missing. ~Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

---------- " Heaven is a nice place. That's what the wolf spirit tells me. " It's been quite a long time since I have been here on the IWS Chat forum. I believe my last visit was Saturday, June 19th. After my DH went to the hospital that Sunday, and then passed away on June 21st, I haven't had the time to be over here at all. However, I have been on CHIL Chat daily, and kept everyone up to date with how I was doing and with what was going on in my life. I finally took the night off from "stuff" to catch up over here, but have only made it to July 5th. I just wanted to say and to thank you all for your well wishes and caring. The Cruzer family is the best family a Cruzer could possibly have.
