DH and I had a fun day yesterday on DD's boat. The weather was supposed to be sunny and 78, but it was cloudy and cool. We had a little cocktail party on the boat and then we were their guests in the diningroom at the yacht club. It was nice to see lots of old friends that we haven't seen for a few years since selling our boat. Got caught up on all the news and had a perfect day. Woke up to miserable weather here, raining and cool, oh well, will just have a lazy day. One errand to do, have to buy new taps for the powder room, the drip has turned into a big drip, drip, drip and they don't make parts for this faucet anymore so off to Home Depot when DH decides to wake up. |

![]() The baby animal above is not a zebra. And it's not a donkey. It's a zedonk. With a zebra father and a donkey mother, the animal has clear black and white stripes on its legs and the brown-haired body of a donkey. The eye-catching filly was born last Wednesday night at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Dahlonega, Georgia, about 60 miles north of Atlanta. "She's absolutely beautiful," said Alison Womack, a volunteer at the preserve, adding that the foal is "fabulous, healthy, doing well." "We think we're going to name her Pippi, for Pippi Longstocking," said C.W. Wathen, the founder and general manager of the preserve. "That's what she looks like -- she's got socks on." The young zedonk is already on display at the preserve, being held in a pasture with her mother until she's mature enough to join the other animals on the 20 acre property. Her head may not look like a zebra’s, but Wathen said the young foal has the brain of an animal from the African savanna. "She sits up, ready to go if anything happens. She's got that wild instinct," he said. Though Wathen has let horses, zebras, and donkeys run together for decades, he said the birth was a complete surprise. It's the first zedonk born on the preserve and only the second he's seen in over 40 years of caring for exotic animals. "When she had it, we noticed it had stripes, and we just couldn't believe it," Wathen said. "We thought after momma cleaned it, it would be different. But it never was." He hopes that the unusual birth will bring more visitors to his non-profit zoo, a refuge for exotic animals abandoned by owners who don't know how to care for them. Zebra-donkey crosses are rare but aren't unheard of. A foal named Alex, offspring of a Zebra mother and a donkey father, was born in Barbados in 2005. |

Artsy, I don't think we hunt bears in Ojai. Hunting isn't a big sport here, I think they like to hunt elsewhere. Carole, Sounds like nice cozy Sunday weather. Donkey - Zebra, I've read several stories on Farm Sanctuary's website about unlikey animals becoming best of friends.

Topa, the zedonk is such a cutie. In a way with the striped legs it reminds me of the okapi. Deb, my condolences on the loss of the young man, Cory, who you mentored. Regan, that must have been so exciting and a bit shocking to see the wolf! Well done on getting a couple of photos before it disappeared. My hands would have been shaking.Deb, I'm trying to do the 10,000 steps although I've only made it to 6,000 for three days now. I'll be happy with maintaining it at that for now. It includes going up a steep hill twice - similar angle to going up the hill where the IWS office is located but not as long. |

gary said the same thing - looks like okapi and he got our little fella off the shelf to demonstrate ![]() Great for you cheryl - like I said I was truly shocked at how few steps I was taking daily even though I was at work and up and down and out and about ...... I'm managing about 4-4,500 steps a day now and working hard to add to that! on weekends and while at camp I was doing 15,000 and + woo hoo the 10 lbs are still gone and I'm working on the next 10 now! I have to see doc in late Sept/Oct for follow up blood work and I hope to surprise him! (and certainly myself) - good-bye extra lbs and not welcome here anymore! if anyone is interested: http://www.thewalkingsite.com/10000steps.html |

Good morning. I tried to post this last night but couldn't override the emoticon restriction no matter how many I deleted. (I think I got it now. cross fingers) Oh Deb how sad about Cory! So tragic to lose such a young and full of promise life. :
And I totally agree about Wolves in the wild, and didn't mean to condone otherwise with the pic of Bo. My very disreputable sib who "owned" Bo, as loved as he claimed he was, always got his identity from his "unusual" animal companions, as so many jerks do, and Grandma tolerated him when no one would. He hand raised Bo and ruined his chances for a life in the wild. ![]() Topa, whenever it looks like it might work out just let me know. Regan your Fishing Wolf pics are amazing! What a beautiful creature in a gorgeous location. I'll never understand how people kill Bears, or any other living creatures?? i've already been fearing the approaching Hunting season, especially for Lily and Hope. It was such a sad day, losing Neptune. Thank you so much for your condolences. I made some screen caps and will forward them to Lori and her DH Jeff when they recover a bit. Neptune was my last "Grandchild", as we called their Nikki, who went to Rainbow Bridge last year, and Neppi. They were brother and sister and he'd been inconsolable since she died. (Emoticon restrictions have limited my punctuation or it would be more animated - Lol!) Edited by circlescribe, Aug 8 2010, 07:33 AM.

Harpo, I'm curious about the 1,0000 step program you are all on.The link didn't open. Zoey and I just walked the fuel break trail, it's a mess. Usually it's wide enough for a truck to drive and now the trail is narrow and covered with dry brush. Budget Cuts???

One Sleepy Baby Orangutan Ouehand Zoo's nearly three week old Orangutan infant LOVES to sleep. In the wild, Orangutans fashion treetop sleeping nests out of branches. Mom's back is a perfect substitute for now. A.J. Haverkamp's picture and video taken just a few days ago catch "Babyboy" in deep REM sleep. ![]()

It's freezing in Ojai today. Brrr, I'm going to put my sweats on and do some cooking. I was looking for recipes for strawberries they are delish right now and instead found this. Banana Delight ![]() 4 Bananas 1/2 cup Semisweet chocolate chips 1/3 cup Shredded coconut 1/3 cup Walnuts Tin Foil 1) Add the chocolate chips, shredded coconut and the walnuts to a jar and mix them by shaking the jar. 2) Unpeel banana. Put banana on a good sized square of tinfoil. Cut banana in 1/2. Shake the previously mixed shredded coconut, chocolate chips and walnuts into the cut portion of the banana so the mixture is 'sandwiched'. 3) Wrap well in tinfoil Place in oven for 5 to 10 minutes. It's difficult to tell when the bananas are done but after a couple you'll get the idea. The goal is to get the Banana Delight hot enough so that the sugars in the banana slightly caramelize, the walnuts get toasted and the chocolate melts. 4) Remove and give them a minute to cool. Unwrap the tinfoil, grab a spoon, and eat up! |
