Good morning everybody! Starting the day off with a 'good news' story. Meet Geppetto from Wetaskiwin, Alberta. This kitty is one of the 2010 Purina Animal Hall of Fame Inductees in Canada.![]() The four 2010 Purina Animal Hall of Fame™ Inductees join 142 heroic animals. Here are their stories. (I'll post the other stories another time.) Gepetto, Wetaskiwin, Alberta Gepetto joined the Sjogren family eight years ago as a tiny orange kitten. A rambunctious ball of fluff, Gepetto kept the Sjogrens in stitches thanks to his antics with fellow cats Missy, Itty Bitty Kitty and Libby, the family's Pug. Now fully grown, Gepetto has matured into a quiet, mellow fellow, which is why his actions in early December 2009 caught Phyllis Sjogren's attention in just the nick of time. The weather forecast was calling for cold, snow and wind so the Sjogrens loaded up with firewood and prepared for a cozy weekend at home. At three a.m. on Monday morning Phyllis woke from a fitful sleep to a cold house, so she turned the thermostat up, ignoring a growing headache and went back to bed. Phyllis barely heard her husband leave for work at six o'clock that morning, thanks to the handy set of ear plugs she wears to bed regularly, but nothing could block out what Phyllis calls, "the terrible sequence of yowls" coming from the basement at six thirty a.m. Other than a random meow or call to go outside, the Sjogren's cats are a quiet bunch, so the distress in Gepetto's wailing voice was enough to make Phyllis jump from bed to investigate. As she rose, Phyllis realized the headache from hours before had now escalated to extreme pain, but she was determined to check first on the safety of her cat. Reaching the kitchen, Phyllis was shocked to find Gepetto making an absolute racket at the top of the basement stairs. Despite an overwhelming feeling of nausea and feeling so dizzy she could barely walk, Phyllis bent down to comfort Gepetto until he quieted down and went down to the basement. Now awake, but ready to crawl back into bed, Phyllis called her husband to ask about her strange symptoms. Alerted by the sequence of events, Martin Sjogren implored his wife to leave the house immediately and call a close friend employed by the gas company for help. Emergency crews revealed the Sjogren's home had filled to a level of 70 per cent with carbon monoxide and Phyllis was suffering from stage two carbon monoxide poisoning - stage three is death. Phyllis credits Geppetto's plaintive cries with saving her life. He knew just when to use his voice - when it was time for him to save his owner. |

August 10, 2010 "When is it my turn?" Last week our pal Hasani, the Western Lowland Gorilla at San Francisco Zoo, made headlines. His adoptive Mom Bawang picked up a boy's dropped Nintendo DS and began to try and figure it out. Photographer Christina Spicuzza was on hand to record every moment. Bawang wasn't so eager to share "her" new toy with Hasani. That didn't stop the curious little fellow from trying to get a game in before the DS was safely returned to the boy by keepers. ![]() ![]() http://www.zooborns.com/zooborns/2010/08/gorilla-baby-to-mom-can-i-play-donkey-kong.html |

Penny - I can't tell the ospreys apart unless they are in the nest and then you can judge by size, so I don't know who's who on the cam. Haven't stopped cleaning today. Thursday we are having 2 new sinks and faucets installed in the guest bathroom and powder room. I am emptying out the vanities, throwing out lots of stuff and cleaning all the plastic containers that hold the things. One down, one to go, I need this break now.

Penny, it's so humid here, too. It is almost difficult to breathe. You did really well to get your yard work done in it. Carole, thanks for the photo of the osprey juveniles. They look like they are posing for the photographer. Well done on your cleanup. It always feels so good to get rid of some clutter. We went to Michael's and I used a couple of coupons to get some cupcake decorating supplies. DH checked out with one. Some of the items are so expensive, such as a tilting turntable for cake decorating ..... $99.00. I just got disposable icing bags and cupcake liners. I'm only going to be experimenting maybe once a week since having iced cupcakes around is just plain too tempting and fattening.Jill, cute little cartoon from Bee. Bee is the person who always posted the coolest graphics when I first started participating in the eagle forum. She got my interest going. |
