Catalina Update, Wednesday, August 18, 2010 :soar: Steffani A forum member sent me a poem after reading the news about K07 and I’d like to share it with you… Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awake in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. ~Anonymous I hope people aren’t discouraged from watching the cameras because of how many mortalities we’ve had this breeding season. Observing the natural behavior of adult eagles and watching the young eagles develop throughout several months is truly a special experience. I understand why people become attach to the youngsters and how emotional it can get when they hear they’ve passed away but please, do not feel discouraged by the sadden news we have to report some times because the fact is that, looking at the big picture here, this is a success story. Every year more eagles call the Channel Islands home and that’s our primary goal. It’s a slow progress but we all work very hard at it. I hope this helps. ![]() Ed finally had his tests yesterday and had no complications! That was one of the big risks. And, pending biopsy results he doesn't have Crohn's disease or any ulcers in his colon. Amazing considering the amount of bleeding he's had for months. That seems to be from chronic inflammation in his lower stomach where the biopsies were taken. His intense pain starts there whenever he has as much as a digestive enzyme capsule or even a drink of water. It's like it's raw and bleeding and unbelievably painful, and connected to his autoimmune condition that also causes his asthma, psoriasis, and arthritis. If the biopsies are negative then the doctor will try to get the inflammation under control. His stomach can't eat much due to the pain it causes and he can't digest effectively as inflamed as it is, so he can't keep his weight from dropping. But it looks like there's nothing bad in his lower intestines despite the pain and swelling he gets there. It's a reaction from the stomach problem. So glad that's over, now we just have to get moved, and all that implies, within a few weeks. Thanks so much for all your positive thoughts! If the biopsies are okay next week we can breathe a sigh of relief, and just have to hope the condition and pain can be controlled. (and his mood improved )I haven't been able to get here much in the last days and am sorry if I missed anything important. I caught a few things tho. Amazing Whale footage yesterday! And Deb's FLW tour pics. I've a lot to catch up on today after yesterdays ordeal and build up to it. Have a great Thursday, everyone.

Bears guarded B.C. grow-op: RCMP Last updated Tuesday, August 17, 2010 | 5:13 PM PT CBC News ![]() An RCMP officer with two of the bears. Police in southeastern B.C. have raided a marijuana grow operation that was apparently guarded by black bears. Officers conducting the raid two weeks ago at Christina Lake found a property with two residential buildings and a fenced-off grow-op with about 1,000 plants, police said Tuesday. But they also found about 10 bears that the owner appeared to be using to keep people from stealing any pot plants, said RCMP Sgt. Fred Mansveld. "[Officers] soon noticed the bears were docile and tame," Mansveld told CBC News. "One of them jumped on our unmarked car for a while. But it soon became apparent they were habituated to the grow operation." It was evident the animals had lived on the property for some time, police said. The woman accused of running the grow-op has been feeding the bears for years, one neighbour said. Police are recommending that the woman face charges related to marijuana cultivation. Conservation officers now have to decide what to do about the bears, which might have to be destroyed because they have become too used to human food and contact, police said. Christina Lake is about 350 kilometres east of Vancouver. |

Penny - That's a terrible story about the bears. The woman operating the grow-op should be put in jail and the bears taken to a very isolated area away from people, not destroyed.
