![]() August 20, 2010 Baby Chimp Doing Well at NC Zoo Early this month, North Carolina Zoo staff made the tough decision to take their new baby chimp in for hand-rearing after it became clear that the baby's first-time mother could not adequately care for her. The baby is healthy and eating well and weighs 3 lbs. 14 oz. She is cared for by staff 24 hours a day and is carried by them most of the time except for brief periods in an incubator. The goal is to get the infant back into the chimpanzee group as soon as possible. She is shown to the chimpanzee group each day for visual socialization. http://www.zooborns.com/zooborns/2010/08/baby-chimp-doing-well-at-nc-zoo.html |

![]() Sanctuaries are sacred places; Collen Patrick Goudreau Walt Whitman wrote, “I think I could turn and live with the animals," and I do -- every chance I get: not just the animals with whom I live but the animals who have been given refuge at sanctuaries. Sanctuaries are sacred places - after all, the word comes from the Latin word sanctus, which means "holy." They provide solace, safety, and lifelong care for animals who have been neglected, abused, and abandoned. They are places where animals heal and people transform. They are where individuals are given names - not numbers -- and who serve as ambassadors for their species. They are places of freedom, hope, and healing - whether they serve farmed animals, wild animals, "exotic" animals, or domestic animals.Collen Patrick Goudreau Steff

Here's something I would really want to go to...... On Saturday, October 16, the Wildlife Center of Virginia will host Buddy Day - a special open house focusing on Buddy, the Bald Eagle hatched at the Norfolk Botanical Garden in April 2008. As you know, Buddy was admitted to the Center as a patient in May 2008 with a case of Avian Pox. That illness has permanently affected Buddy's beak and means that he cannot be released back to the wild. Earlier this year, the Center announced that Buddy would be a permanent resident here. ![]() Buddy in March 2009 ................................ and May 2010 Participating in Buddy Day will be Wildlife Center staff who are closely involved in the care, feeding, and training of Buddy, including: · Ed Clark, President and Co-Founder of the Wildlife Center of Virginia; · Dr. Dave McRuer, the Center's Director of Veterinary Services; and · Suzy Doell, one of the Center's wildlife rehabilitators and Buddy’s lead trainer. Buddy Day participants will also have the opportunity to observe Buddy in his enclosure (since Buddy lives outdoors, this will be dependent on acceptable weather). Buddy Day will start at 10 a.m. and is expected to run until about 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided for Buddy Day guests. There is no charge to join the Center for Buddy Day. However, spaces are limited, and pre-registration is required. Please make reservations for Buddy Day by calling the Center at 540.942.9453 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week) or by email at wildlife@wildlifecenter.org. |
