They were clipping snippets off of the limbs but they drop them in the yard - grrr - what a mess our yard is - oh well! |

Deb, this is a bit of information about leucistic birds. I guess this one would be called partially leucistic since the white was patchy (but there was a lot of white, not easily seen in the only photo we got). It wasn't just juvenile white feathers. "Leucism, or leukism, is an abnormal plumage condition caused by a genetic mutation that prevents pigment, particularly melanin, from being properly deposited on a bird's feathers. As a result, the birds do not have the normal, classic plumage colors listed in field guides, and instead the plumage have several color changes, including: White patches where the bird should not have any Paler overall plumage that looks faint, diluted or bleached Overall white plumage with little or no color discernable The degree of leucism, including the brightness of the white and the extent of pigment loss, will vary depending on the bird's genetic makeup." We've been watching the weather reports to see what is going on near Long Island plus up the east coast to the Maritimes. Hope Earl heads out into the Atlantic. Just consider that the squirrels are adding 'mulch' and helping your yard.

Heather Ray (OM) wanted to see our robin photo so I sent it to her. She agrees that it is leucistic. The OM camera link is working much better now. Plus one can log in through Facebook. The chat works much better, too. Zaplive is out of business. It was always a pain logging in last year. I think this will be much better once migration begins. OM right now is hoping for a start date of October 1st, much earlier! |

Cheryl Wonder if the robin condition could happen to other animals? A year ago I was out taking photos of deer one evening and there was a doe that had large white patches on her (Almost couldn't stand to see her) Was so strange! Well, I'm calling it a night, after 8:00PM here |

G'day Peeps! Blustery DownUnder today too, the last of the winter blast says the Bureau of Meteology! A photo posted to the online sharing site Reddit has the Internet abuzz. It shows a tiny animal--a shrimp-like crustacean called a copepod--and announces that the reader found it in his New York City tap water. "You swallow these invisible shrimp with every gulp of NYC tap water," trumpeted online blog Gizmodo about the discovery. Time magazine's website also announced the find breathlessly, exhorting New Yorkers to "drink up"-- http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/news/chiefeditor/2010/09/shrimp-in-drinking-water-are-harmless.html A couple of sad animal stories: BAd Zoo in Bangkok http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/mall-menagerie-exposes-life-in-thailands-hellish-zoos-20100903-14uce.html The demise of some Australian mammals... http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/20-years-left-mammals-plunge-into-extinction-20100901-14nmz.html And an Important Tasmanian Devil passes away http://www.smh.com.au/environment/cedrics-fight-raises-hope-beyond-death-20100901-14nn0.html Loved the information about the Robin Cheryl and I forgot to say WOOHOO for the WC fledges yesterday! |

cheryl how interesting - thanks for the info I drink our island water but I've always been told (and seen shows on TV) don't put any water under the microscope or you may never drink it again! we decided to pop down to Jones Beach and check out Earl's waves - wow the high tide this aftrnoon flooded the whole beach (and it's a big one) The beaches are of course closed but some of the lifeguards were apparently checking out the water instead of watching their post and a group of folks meandered out onto the beach to get a closer look (us included) - but eventually the cops who were there (nice guys) told folks the beach was closed and to mosey back to the boardwalk I'll download what photos I took but not sure anything will be worthwhile! On the way there though - we saw ma/pa osprey (the ones that the nest failed) eating - saw an osprey at each of the nests eating - and saw 2 others on lamp posts eating! Too dark for any kind of shots and with the hurricane cloud cover oh well but good to see them! |

I'm looking forward to the OM cam again. Last year was fun virtual riding along side the ultralight and whoopers. We got to the beach today just in time for the fog to roll in. The water was smooth, lots of jumping dolphins / porpoises feeding. I saw a jumping dolphin / porpoise jumping out of the water, but it happened so fast I couldn't photo it. ![]() ![]() |
