Beautiful graphics this morning from everyone. Thanks Circle, Thanks for the Animal rescue site and the beautiful photo of one of my favorite places ' Big Sur " It's another hot day today already 97 degrees and the is blazing hot! I got a late start so decided to walk through a neighborhood that is under an oak tree grove, called the Arbolada. Everywhere I went so far today the youngsters were doing business in the Spirit of Labor Day Weekend. This valencia orange stand was cute.. And Evan, such a great kid working to raise money in this heat so he can go to Catalina Island with his 6th grade class. He needs to raise $350. Evan said he was doing very well raising the $$$. I made a donation to his trip and he took my email address so he could email me photos! Evan you are such a cool kid! Evans dad said it was Ok to post his photo. While Evan told me he made the folder and knew about the Catalina eagles. Support small grower farmers. ![]() Evan ![]()

Was at Merrill Creek Reservoir with the birders doing the Hawk/Raptor count. Such a change in temperature from yesterday. But the shift in the wind was great for their flights. And we had at least 6 eagles go through besides a number of hawks. (Our resident eagles are not counted) KRIS I remember "Gidget" I wanted so much to attend a luau but had NO chance. There was none around where we were. My friend's step son lives on a dirt road in the rainforest. we were lucky to see Acaca falls, Volcano Nat'l Park, and hiked in the pitch dark, with a flashlight a mile over black lava to see the fire in the Pu Oo active crater at night. I think it is hilarious for a parrot to sound like a fog horn The photo of Big Sur and that winding road is awesome!!! PENNY I think that luecistic is so sad and Oh that poor eagle! KLJinOZ I've been told Kauai and even Oahu is nicer than the Big Island. |

Hi Everyone! First chance to get on the forum today, very busy. First thing this morning Doreen came to visit with the 2 airedales, she and I want Maya to get used to them and they were great together, Maya even barked at one when she got too close. Then DD, SIL and GS, complete with Cora the golden retriever came for lunch, well actually to meet Maya. They brought lunch for all of us so it was easy on me and a wonderful surprise to see them all. Then DS came with both granddaughters to meet Maya. Of course the kids made her a bit wild with all the new toys and balls they bought for her. Needless to say, I have one very tired puppy now but a tired puppy is a good puppy. We ended going to a family restaurant around the corner for dinner with DS and the kids. I came home to a tired puppy who slept in her crate and was so happy to see me and have some peace and quiet after 11 hours of people and dogs. I am totally exhausted too so am going to bed, watch some tennis and then Will catch up on all the posts tomorrow.

Lily the Black Bear - Update September 4, 2010 - 8:21 PM CDT Hunters Arrive June grooming her belly - Sept 4, 2010 The reprieve we got during the first few days of the hunt is over. Hunters are actively hunting in the heart of the study area. The radio-collared bears are still okay, but at least one hunter is crowding in to the property line. A friend found a trail cam at the WRI property line aimed down a game trail. The camera will give the exact time any bears use that trail. We worry for the valuable study bears that are not wearing radio-collars. These are the bears that mate with the radio-collared bears and trust us enough to ignore us and show natural behavior. The information they give is unprecedented. Others of these non-radio-collared bears are neighbors of the clan members. These are bears we recognize when we are walking with radio-collared bears and witness territorial interactions that help us understand their social organization. Each of these trusting, recognizable non-radio-collared bears has a history of interactions with the radio-collared clan members. The history helps us understand future observations and put them in perspective. How can we politely ask hunters to respect the research enough to not crowd in and kill bears on the property line? Can something be legal but not ethical? The next few weeks will be long. June's GPS stopped transmitting during the night. We tracked her down this morning and found her collar had spun around so the GPS unit was under her chin. We spun it back and took the opportunity to install fresh batteries in the GPS unit to keep her 'on the map' as she continues her movement toward a den. We walked with her as she traveled, foraged, groomed, and rested. She fed on clover, peavine, jewelweed, and interrupted fern. Her fresh scat was full of vegetation and a few mountain ash seeds. Lily and Hope are together and doing fine. We saw Ty and Jack tonight after legal hunting hours, so we know they are okay. A big thank you to the Lily fans and the WRI fundraising team that are showing such good support in this hard time. We don't know what to say except thank you. And thank you, too, for your hard work trying to come from behind in the school competition. Thank you for all you do. ~Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
