Good morning everyone

Do you know what the Nest Adoption Challenge is?
It's a great way to help IWS and the bald eagle project!
AND the monies you donate to NAC, allows you to participate in the distribution of items that are available for every nest adopted.

So far, we have collectively adopted two, yes TWO nests and are well on our way to adopting a third nest! :**:

Below is a list of ways you can participate - AND you can participate once, twice, three times or more over the period of the 2011 NAC which runs this year until June 30, 3011

Cruzers and Forum Visitors can participate in "Adopt-A-Nest" beginning Monday - April 4, 2011 ! You can give once - twice - or as often as your heart desires!

The Cruzers have dedicated themselves to supporting the monumental efforts of IWS and are hosting the 2011 Nest Adoption Challenge - each $1,000 raised adopts a Channel Island Nest! Is there a way you can help make a difference? Yes - every single donation adds up and together, we can adopt one nest at a time!

And what is a Cruzer - it is anyone who watches the bald eagle nests and loves the Channel Island Eagles!

There are several ways that you can make a regular dollar contribution:

1. Visit IWS.org by clicking on this link Make a Contribution

NOTE: If you pay thru Pay Pal, you must select a quantity to represent your total amount (it allows for $5.00 increments)

2. You can mail checks to: Institute for Wildlife Studies - PO BOX 2500 - Avalon CA 90704

3. Credit card information can be emailed to Peter Sharpe, Ph.D. at IWS: sharpe@iws.org or called directly to Dr. Sharpe at: 310-510-2728

<::: Besides monetary donations, credit will also be given for the following - but you must request 2011 Nest Adoption credit at time of purchase :

4. If you are "purchasing" a new OR renewing your IWS supporting membership, Dr. Sharpe has advised: "I apply the tax-deductible portion of any contribution or membership to the Cruzers if they specify they are part of the Cruzers" and include a note that it is for the Nest Adoption Challenge.

NOTE: CHIL or IWS Forum memberships are FREE and allow you to post and chat!

IWS Supporting Membership (clickable link) is a financial supporting membership with the IWS organization - click on this link for more info.
- note: you can now arrange to make payment for your sponsorship/membership over a 12 month period!

5. If you are sponsoring a Camera feed during the Challenge, you can have the tax deductible portion credited to the NAC!
Cam Sponsor Information - Just $25 Per Day! - click on this link for more info.

6. If you purchase merchandise from IWS.org - click on link for more info, you can have the tax deductible portion credited - the items includes IWS sweatshirt and T-shirt, hat, wing bling, Cumbrian DVD and more!

NOTE: Again just be sure to indicate "Cruzer Nest Adoption Challenge" and provide the following information: Your REAL name / your FORUM name / your home mailing address / your email address / a telephone number

You DO NOT have to be a forum member to contribute - any visitor to the forum, any observer of the nests, any lover of Eagles - you are all welcome to help support the IWS effort!

Nest Sanitation: Bald eagles eat a lot so of course they poop a lot! The poop contains a lot of "whitewash" so if a baby were pooping IN the nest, it would be noticeable. Eagles do not produce fecal sacs as most songbirds do. The baby eagle, instead, wanders to the edge of the nest, turns and poops over the edge. This will keep the nest clean but the branches and ground below - oh my! The "whitewash" is the bird's urine. The kidneys filter the blood and the nitrogen wastes are excreted as urine. In mammals, the nitrogen wastes are in the form of urea, which is yellowish, has an ammonia-like smell and is very toxic, so needs to be diluted with a LOT of water to keep from poisoning the animal or human. (Mammalian fetuses actually start excreting urine while they're still inside the mother, but her amniotic fluid dilutes it and is constantly being "cleaned" by her blood.)

Because the eagles develop in eggs, they can't excrete urea so their nitrogen wastes are excreted as uric acid. It is white and very toxic and precipitates to a solid when very concentrated. Inside the egg, when a chick excretes blood wastes, they collect in a little chamber called the"allantois." When you find the shell of a successfully hatched egg, you sometimes can see the chalky deposit.

Checking in on Linton Zoo's Turkmenian Eagle Owlets Posted Image

Linton Zoo’s Turkmenian Eagle Owlets are growing up fast. Igor, Yelena and Misha the Turkmenian Eagle Owlets weighed just 50g at hatching, they are now tipping the scales at over 1200g each, quite a difference in just 4 weeks! These 3 bundles of fluff hatched in mid March but were rejected by their inexperienced mother and so were removed for hand-rearing.

The Turkmenian Eagle owl is one of the largest and most spectacular owls in the world eventually reaching around 4.5 kg and is closely related to the large European Eagle owl. Sadly though, it is believed to now be extinct in its original wild range around Turkmenistan, there are also very few in captivity so these three Easter chicks are very important individuals, although they may not realise it! Both parents of these special birds were also hatched at Linton Zoo, their dad “Pip” is 22 years old this year and mum “Rohan” is now 4.

Great morning post for the eaglecams. ^"^ :^: :<<>>: :clk:

This is a fun week. Passover , Earth Day : , and Easter Sunday.

What do you think of Ozzie going to Vietnam? Pretty amazing that in our
life time we fought with Vietnam in such a horrific war :candle: and now it is a distination vacation.
It should be a fascinating trip. Can't wait to see her :clk: . Did she go with BOB?

Terrific pictures, Carole ... love the eagle credit card and the 'nest egg' idea. You made me smile with your cute theme today.

Monster Man rofl rofl one of the best eaglet pics ever! :D

Topa, the little owlets are such puffy fluff balls. <3 Funny to see the little stuffed toy owlet in there.

Penny, yes, I guess Mia had a combination of car sickness and nerves. I had lots of barf bags with me but she wanted her mom which meant I ended up in a mess, too. She was happy once she got in the house and had all the other dogs to play with. She knew Jenny, too, which was sweet.

Topa - The owlets are so cute and fluffy and they have their own beanie :D Please snag the graphic and use it when you need it.

Cheryl - Poor Mia. Our friend's young Schnauzer gets car sick all the time. The vet told her to use Gravol but she didn't want to knock the dog out with drugs. She went to a health food store and bought a natural drop for nausea and so far it's working.
Maya is the first dog we have had that was never carsick. :X: Just keep taking Mia in the car every day even if it is around the block, eventually she will be fine.

Our Passover Seder (meal) last night was great. Everyone had a good time and ate so well. It was a double celebration as it was GD Meghan's 15th birthday so DD brought a cake and we all sang to her. Alan was a huge help and stayed up late taking all the bridge chairs downstairs and emptying the dishwasher. This morning I cleaned up and he vacuumed, my back was breaking. The only thing I don't like about Passover is the matzoh crumbs that you find everywhere :8O: , Maya even brought some up to our bed as they stuck on her paws rofl . Lots of leftovers so won't be cooking for the next few days.
