ORFOLK

Biologists and Norfolk Botanical Garden staff are checking the area around the garden’s bald-eagle nest to try to locate the female after an eagle collided with a plane this morning at Norfolk International Airport.

Airport Deputy Executive Director Robert Bowen said Reese Lukei, a local eagle expert, examined the dead eagle and identified it as a 15-year-old female that’s almost certainly the mother of the three eaglets nesting at the garden.

Already, the male eagle has been spotted, said Kelly Gaita, public relations manager for the garden.

The strike happened shortly before 9 a.m., Bowen said. The US Airways flight from Philadelphia hit the eagle either as it was flying over Lake Whitehurst or over the runway, Bowen said.

He added that the eagle apparently had just caught a fish because a fish was found near the bird’s remains.

Bowen said there were no injuries among the 21 passengers on board, but the left landing gear sustained some damage.

An airplane struck and killed an eagle just two weeks ago at the airport. Other eagle strikes occurred in 2005 and 2002.

The female was at the nest this morning feeding the three hatchlings shortly before 8 a.m., according to the moderated blog on the WVEC Eagle Cam site. The three eaglets were removed from the nest last week, banded and returned. They hatched last month.

For more details, return to PilotOnline.com later and read tomorrow's Virginian-Pilot.
