She's a :soar: supermom, defying the odds![]() Posted: May 05, 2009 7:46 PM Updated: May 20, 2009 11:33 PM By Leasa Conze Bald eagles typically raise their young together, with parents taking turns foraging for food and protecting the next. But, this female is raising her offspring all on her own. The male disappeared a few days after the nestling hatched. Volunteers watching over the nest saw what was happening. Arizona Game and Fish put out extra food but she hardly touched it, instead relying more on the trout stocked in the Salt River over the winter. "We've been keeping a close eye on this nest and we're excited that all of our management efforts are paying off," says Kenneth Jacobson, bald eagle management coordinator for Game and Fish. "We have never documented a single adult bald eagle successfully raise their young from such an early age. This female is deserving of the title "Supermom." Read the rest of the story here If this could do it with her own I'm sure Pa Norfolk can get enough to the nest for his 3. He has always been a really good provider and they have their feathers to regulate their body temps so he doesn't need to brood them. No Mombrella though

I know what you mean Carole and you have even more reason to be distraught I used to really worry about this scenario at the Sidney nest because there is an airport right there too... Remember this of Tiny ducking as the plane came in for a landing?

Carole, I just wanted to thank you for the bright and cheerful presentation of the Sauces nest. A-40 is doing a good job as a new dad, I think. It's nice to see the newest IWS online nest and family being featured.OMG, this is a shock about the Norfolk mom, if it is truly her, and it sounds as if it is. |

Norfolk Botanical Garden - Official NewsThis morning an adult bald eagle was struck and killed by an incoming airplane at Norfolk International Airport. It is believed that this bird was the female of the nesting pair from Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG). The strike occurred sometime between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m. These eagles were well known through the Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Cam provided by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), Norfolk Botanical Garden, and WVEC, and have been at NBG since 2003. According to Stephen Living, VDGIF biologist, and Reese Lukei, a research associate with the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB), “We are fairly certain that this is the Norfolk Botanical Garden female eagle due to her physical characteristics, size and the fact that she has not been seen at the nest since the strike.” This year the pair of eagles has produced three chicks at that nest site. Biologists with the VDGIF, CCB, and the staff at NBG will continue to monitor the nest and are working to ensure the health of the eaglets. |

Phoebe Snow died today too. Another great one by Phoebe Snow that I'll bet Deb might know: Harpo's Blues. I loved this album. It's also the 11th anniversary of the death of my little brother, Erik. He had Downs Syndrome and was the sweetest soul I ever knew. He died from maternal neglect, abuse actually. Overall a very sad day.

This mystical seeming camera anomaly appeared while I was watching the Norfolk nest a little while ago, and I managed to capture it. People on the WVEC chat commented that it seemed like a sign from Rainbow Bridge, the spirit of Mom in the shape of a blue Eagle head with a "light bow" in the foreground, or even God, making their presence known. Ed and I have studied photographic anomalies and what's called "spirit photography", have seen a lot of things, and it may be just camera optics and rain effects, but an eerie synchronicity and a very ethereal image whatever it is.
