It was announced that the Norfolk Eaglets will be removed from the nest beginning at 10 am Eastern Time. All the experts consulted arrived at that decision to give them the best chance of surviving and thriving. My heart is breaking for Dad having to lose his chicks after losing his mate so tragically, and for the poor chicks who will lose both parents. Praying that this is the best option.

Posted by SCK on NBG: I just read about the National Eagle Respository and am glad and proud our Mom eagle likely will be given to Native Americans for ceremonial use. That's a fitting end for a great eagle. She will live on! "The National Eagle Repository is located at Rocky Mountain Arsenal northeast of Denver, Colorado. Its purpose is to provide a central location for the receipt, storage, and distribution of bald and golden eagles that are found dead, and their parts. The eagles, and their parts, are shipped to qualified Native Americans for use in religious Indian ceremonies." Posted by VA_RDH: And it is also fitting that a local Native American Drum troupe will be offering a memorial service for her at the gardens this weekend. Mom will receive a proper ceremonial transfer from this world. Home Sweet Home. :soar: |

Wildlife Center of Virginia to raise eaglets to be released back into the wildAt WCV the eaglets’ health will be evaluated and monitored closely throughout their treatment. They will be placed in an artificial nest that has been constructed in the Center’s 200-foot eagle flight cage. Other adult Bald Eagle patients may also be in this enclosure. While the chicks will be separated by a physical barrier from direct contact with other eagles, the eaglets will be able to see other eagles flying and feeding. As they begin to fledge, the barrier will be removed and the young eagles will have full access to the long enclosure, to build their wing strength and to learn to fly. The goal would be to get the young eagles ready for release back into the wild this summer.

It's Buddy's 3rd Birthday Today I think they 'forgot' about it with all the other NBG nest drama ![]() Members of the Center’s rehabilitation staff started training Buddy in February 2010. The goal is to train the bird to sit calmly on a handler’s gloved hand, so that Buddy can be taken to programs and presentations off-site. The training process often takes many months of hard work – for both the eagle and the handlers. This is the last current info on how he is doing ![]() April 21 update from Claire Thain Buddy continues to become more comfortable with staying on the glove for extended periods of time. He will also sit on the perch as I attach the swivel and leash. Therefore, he has moved to the next step – introducing him to the idea of going through the door of his enclosure. Buddy’s enclosure has a “double door” system, meaning that there is a secure passageway attached to the back of his enclosure. Most of the WCV flight pens have this system — it makes entering and exiting cages much safer because it helps prevent escapes. For Buddy, this means he will need to learn how to navigate through two doors while remaining on the glove. Buddy seems to be comfortable with going through the first door – from the enclosure to the passageway – but gets nervous once he moves out in the passageway. To help with this process, a “mailbox perch” was built by WCV volunteer Bob Post. The new perch is in the shape of a giant mailbox and is sits on the ground. Over the past few weeks, I have trained Buddy on this new mailbox perch inside his enclosure. Yesterday, the perch was moved out into the passageway to provide a familiar landmark to Buddy in this new environment. If he is too nervous continuing to sit on the glove once he’s in the hall, he then has the option to fly to this perch. The goal is to work at his pace and train him to stay on the glove as he goes through the doors. |

A memorial bench will be dedicated in a ceremony (date to be determined) where you and your family and friends can join us to share fond memories. Wording on the plaque will also be determined at a later date. You can also choose one of 14 magnificent photos to keep her memory alive. ![]() Photos of the female flying and perching in 2011 by Duane Noblick |
