The Norfolk nest looks so desolate. My heart aches for Dad who must be in such a state of confusion and grief. It's a blessing that the Eaglets were safely captured and will be assured of having every chance for wild free lives. The many moving tributes to Mom and knowing that she will live on in her many offspring bring some comfort, but it's still such a devastating blow. Her loss has broken so many thousands of hearts, hearts that she and her family had brought so much joy to, and that seems her greatest legacy. I was so glad to see that annsva, of the NGB forum was able to catch and also post the unusual light effect that I posted here last night. I would have joined their forum just to share it, but found it posted there this morning. One Eaglet is in a slightly different position in each cap but the fleeting image is very much the same. The blue light shapes shimmered for just a few short seconds and then were gone. I didn't even notice the amazing "light bow" until I cropped it. It seemed a moment of real magic and presence of spirit to me. Here are a couple of comments from the camera chat scroll. Penny, Carole, Cheryl, Carol, and Bette, I wanted to say how much I appreciated the kind words and thoughts for my DB, Erik last night. I hope he was listening in and was warmed by them too. I think of him often, especially on "his days". And I felt it was a tribute to him to share his memory with you all. Thank you for letting me. His loss wasn't the only tragedy that occurred as a result of events that happened out of my or Lori's control, but it was one of the worst, and we did our best at the time to change the inevitable outcomes. It's a long terrible saga that I have alluded to before and that still haunts us. Though we're doing our best to move on. Bless precious Buddy on his 3rd birthday! Another of Norfolk Mom's gifts and heartaches too. Edited by circlescribe, Apr 27 2011, 11:58 AM.

They were cleaning up, probably leaving food and fresh water. I saw the same thing last year with Noah. They even gave Noah a swimming pool, hope they give one to the eagleteers, nice way to stay cool on a hot day. |

The image of Pa on the nest calling for his babies is Kris![]() He brought a with him ![]() Ed Clark, Wildlife Center of VA: ... leaving one eaglet in the nest would have met a need of the public to avoid seeing the father left all alone, but it would have put the single chick at far greater risk of being killed by a predator while dad was out hunting for food. That would not really have been fair to the remaining chick |

That is so true, Penny. If they had left one chick, we would all be here feeling sorry for how lonely it would be without it's siblings. This is just a sad situation, and I think we have to respect the decision that was made. I think if this happened to a nest in the wild - not on a cam - nature would take it's course and no one would know. It could work out fine, but it might not. We do know that these three eaglets will survive and will be released and thinking of that makes me feel better about it. |

Such a sad two days! If you are aloud to "vent" on here then I have to say "I AM SO ANGRY I COULD SPIT NAILS! Why is it that humans always think they can do betterthan nature!. Imorton is so right! These were NOT newborn chicks! They were big enough to be left on the nest alone for a time! Pa Norfolk was capable of bringing in food. And he should have HAD A CHANCE! Humans should have LET THEM ALONE! And just observed! to ROB PA Norfolk of everything is anti- natural. It's just an excuse that the humans talked themselves into. It's a SAD day! |

White Rock Nest - I have never seen anything like this before. An intruder who looked like a juvie was harassing the nesting eagle and just wouldn't leave. Finally Dad showed up and chased the intruder off. This went on for 1/2 hour, phew......... ![]()

Hi everybody. Tears and sadness for the Norfolk family. Thank you for all the tributes and special photos and graphics. That's a real heartbreaker of a photo of Pa Norfolk. All we can do is hope that the three eaglets thrive and are released into the wild. I'm glad that Ma Norfolk's feather will be cherished and used again. Nice to know that there will be a ceremony for her as well. Thanks for the hug from cutie-pie Maya, Carole. Jeanne, bravo for your presentation coverage of the diligent efforts and the success of the IWS. Terrific job! |
