posted at CHIL but wanted to share a few of the photos here too:

Just quick note - a ton of photos to sort thru so will get one it shortly and do a slide show!

Until I get it done - I had whined (yes I did :( ) to some folks that I didn't see how we were going to make our CA trip this year with Gary's upcoming hike, DS's wedding, etc.......

But then as I said before, I wondered if we could do something over Easter since our scouts were not going to make a trip this year like we normally do...... the stars were aligned and things came together quickly......

Gary and I hooked up with Joanie/Scott - who with some great luck, were able to get away for a few days on Easter weekend too. Scott knowing Catalina, offered to work out lodging and he found a condo setting - outstanding! Gary and I had considered in the past to rent a house like some of the Cruzers had done last year ? We stayed in the 2nd level unit from the top! What a view and setting.

(top balcony seems to go all the way across - the next balconies down are split into two separate units - the right balcony on the right is where we stayed AND you might notice - on the right is the A49 Banner) I swear

Posted Image

edit: here's a cropped image - there's a little eagle flag hanging on left - you can see Eagle Crossing yellow sign hanging on back wall - and the A49 banner is on the right rofl

Pete was away so Steffani was our gracious tour guide on Saturday (having Sunday off) and as always - outstanding - new experiences - learning new things! Off to have a look at the SR chicklets - the oldest on Catalina!

Posted Image

Joanie and Gary comparing photos of course :) I'm sure she has a large number to sort thru as well.

Posted Image

Steff had to check PR nest along the way so Joanie and I meandered on the road as we hung out - we saw a lot of Fox scat along the path - guess it's used regularly - and it turns out that they sometimes do their "business" on a rock and the next fox will do his right on top - a way of marking their territory :)

before heading to pimu/hydi feeding at the end of the day, we stopped at the ever popular Airport for Buffalo Burgers and COOKIES :Yum: :Yum: :Yum:

Posted Image

I promise - since I'm off the rest of the week (ES had to go back to work which is one of the reasons the trip was so short and quick) - I'll try to get to the photos and put a reasonable presentation together!

I'm sad though that indeed we did have dinner when we got back from Catalina - with Jim and Karen and I don't think any of us took any photos :'( what were we thinking!

A special thanks to Joanie/Scott for all of their help once Gary confirmed he could get a couple days from work (much to the dismay of his boss). The CA weather was great - thank goodness - because we had no "play" time to adjust schedules if things didn't work out!

Lily the Black Bear - Update April 27, 2011 – 2:57 PM CDT

Holed up in a snowstorm

Hope coming out of balsam thicket bed site

More snow! With temperatures around 32 F, snow came down hard this morning.

What would Lily and family do?

balsam thicket bed site

Accompanied by WCCO-TV (Minneapolis), we checked late morning as the snowfall was letting up. Lily et al. were in the same area as yesterday, but instead of being by a big pine for safety, they were in a thicket of young balsams for shelter. Homing in on Lily’s radio-collar, we found Hope in the process of tearing a rotting log apart for grubs. The three inches of snow apparently had stopped the search for snow fleas in the ground litter. Then we noticed Lily and Faith nearby under the balsams. The TV crew, the same crew that did the nice story about Lily and family back in February, got a nice shot of Lily lying on her back while Faith lay on her chest nursing from the usual anterior left nipple. She was sticking to her nipple even though Hope wasn’t around.

Hope had a play face, so Lynn put his fingers in her mouth to see how hard she might bite in play…nothing that would bruise. She is controlling her bite well.

Jo’s GPS signals are in a tight group, so she is probably holed up as well.

In the Readers Digest contest to win money for Ely, we have 536,684 votes, just 871 votes out of 5th place. The link to vote 10 times in a row each day through May 16 is here .

In the Chase contest to win money for the International Wolf Center, we are solidly in 3rd place. This is the contest where we can vote only once through May 4. To vote, go to this link and click “Like.” Then go to this link and register your vote for the International Wolf Center.

Dana Coleman’s first grade class initiated a petition to have the American black bear named Minnesota’s state mammal. This is an amazing opportunity for students across Minnesota to learn about their state government. Here is the link to the i class’s petition .

Thank you for all you are doing.

This is what Ed Clark of WCV said on the live blog about the removal of the NBG eaglets today.

Ed Clark - I do not know what is going on with the male eagle, but suspect he'll hang around for a day or two before getting on with his life. He will almost certainly do just fine. Lament and self-pity are fortunately human traits not shared by most animals.

The male eagle will almost certainly find a new mate before the next breeding season. It is not unreasonable to hope that he will bring his new mate back to the same nest for the new season, though only time will tell about that.
