Eaglepedia Revisited April 21, 2007 In a few short weeks, the nestlings have grown quite big with feathers just beginning to push through their down. Beaks, heads and feet are changing and they begin to look more and more like their parents. They will try to stand on their wobbly legs but fall into a downy heap, trying again and again! Development: Eye shield - the eybrow that grows over the eye socket, creating the classic eagle scowl. The beak develops a hooked, sharp point. The toes develop long, hooked, sharp claws called talons. ![]() Courtesy of OJaiHikers - what eagles like to eat (fish chart) ![]() AND March 1, 2007 Not only do the bald eagle chicks grow rapidly, but so does their appetite! Large nestlings can consume nearly as much food as adults - around 2 pounds of flesh in a single meal. At weeks 6/7, the eaglets will begin to feed themselves. They push and shove each other, they will grab chunks of food from their parents and gobble them down before it can be stolen away by a sibling, then beg for more! Parents at this point, will simply drop off the food every 3-4 hours during daylight hours and let the eaglets in the nest sort it out on their own. This laissez-faire method of feeding may continue to the day that the eaglets leave the nest and, in some instances, even after the youngsters have ostensibly set out on their own. There's a rhyme and a reason to the great outdoors! As you know All Eagles All The Time 2007/2008 is an Archival/History showing the various stages throughout the year in the lives of the Eagles. We followed them through the Nestorations and then onto the Eggs/Incubation stage. Next was the exciting stage of the Hatching of their Chicks and following their Early Development. THEN ... the horrendous attack on May 19, 2008 changed life on the Pelican Harbor nest for this Eagle family! Both eaglets survived the attack but were injured and had to be flown to Dr. Weldy’s Serrano Animal and Bird Hospital to be ‘repaired’. Penny I flaked out last night before seeing your last comment. But wanted to add that we do know a lot of the people who make fake Crop Circles. One group even calls itself "Team Satan"! Ed fell out with his best friend 15 years ago when his friend started making hoaxed circles himself. The Cottage Industry and tourism is so entrenched in the subject that people are more than happy to make hoaxing their hobby, even though most of it is done illegally. It's very hard to catch people in the dead of night in the expanses of fields. "TS" was actually paid 100,000 pounds by an advertising company some years ago to make a "Hello Kitty" logo! Every time you see a Crop Circle in an ad, if it's not CGI, it's usually been done by one of the known hoaxing groups. Nonmanmade circles have been documented for centuries, and scientifically studied since the late 1980s, but those facts have been mostly lost in the "circus" the whole subject's become. I had occasion to make your Veggie Suet Ball recipe today, or at least adapt from what I had in the house. A Magpie has recently been coming and devouring the ones we've been buying, and our little Blackbird friend started bringing his new chick around to feed in the yard. We both saw Daddy feeding his baby this morning! They were eating the "fat balls" we've been buying so that fast all of a sudden we ran out, and with the shop that sells bird supplies closed today for the wedding I had to concoct something to feed them. I had veggie suet (no Crisco here ), organic Peanut Butter, chopped dried fruits, mostly Raisins and Sultanas, and couscous. It's hardening in the fridge now while we're feeding them the last of the seed and chopped dried fruit. The Magpies are so shy I'll never get a good pic of one, but this is one I snagged online. They're just gorgeous. About Crow sized with a long tail, black, white and iridescent indigo blue feathers.

Good afternoon, everybody. Great way to start the forum page with the wedding pictures, Deb. We got up at 4 am and have turned off the TV just now. I loved every minute, every second even of the wedding. Robert had bought us some scones so we had those for breakfast. I'll be watching all the re-runs later today, just can't get enough. I loved Kate's dress, the uniforms on Prince William and Prince Harry, Pippa's dress, and the red uniforms on the little pageboys. The carriage ride after the wedding with the four white horses made me think of Cinderella. Plus seeing the crowd walking down the Mall with the flags waving and the police walking slowly in front, and the trees in the cathedral ....... Penny, thank you for your comments about the NAC presentation that I did. I just wanted to let you know that I did see what you wrote last night. I'm glad that your hubby is doing alright. Topa, your slideshow was so touching and brought back so many memories, both happy and sad. Spirit is a special little survivor and I hope so much that he will stay and raise a family on the Islands. Perfect choice of music, too. Bravo! ![]() Thinking of Carole, Alan and their SIL today. Kris, your birdies are ahead of ours ..... no babies here yet. I have seen robins gathering long, dry grass blades, etc. and there has been lots of singing and chirping going on, but that's it so far. |

The baby is here. She arrived last night just before midnight. My sister and BIL are first-time grandparents. My mother is now a great-grandmother. This is the first baby in our family in @ 17 years, my goodness. Meet Ellie (Elizabeth Anne). She was born at home.

I just read on CHIL that Anne/asparky posted that another dead Bald Eagle's remains has been found near to the NCTC nest area, and is thought to likely be the missing Liberty. It's been such a tragic season for some of the birds and animals we love and follow.
