Penny, thanks for the info on Norfolk Mom's memorial today. I hope they post a video of it on YT. :X: I forgot how many pics I had of Norfolk Mom, Dad and their chicks, until I started looking through my folders. :'( <:3 :candle:

Tomorrow is yet another Bank Holiday here, for May Day this time. They really take it seriously here. I found this timely video on YT from Camelot, one of my favorite Arthurian films. It's Vanessa Redgrave at her most dewy and beautiful singing The Lusty Month of May.

We took a bike ride today to an arboretum and a wood a few miles away. It was so green and lush with Bluebells, and sprouting Bracken Ferns. A perfect way to spend May Day. Queen Anne's Lace is blooming everywhere! Ed's been trying to recover since we got back. This is one pic of many.

OH, COME ON ! I know you are in there!

Come with me to :http://s11.zetaboards.com/IWS_Eagle_Forum/index/

scroll down to the Daily Chat and check out how YOU can help me help the eagles of Catalina and Santa Cruz.

Started by the "Cruzers" (members of the Eagle Discussion Forum) in 2007, the annual Nest Adoption Challenge helps support IWS' bald eagle restoration programs, including the web cams. A Level 1 Nest Adoption is typically a $1000 donation and includes an invitation for 3-4 people to spend a day with an IWS biologist on Catalina Island, photos of your adopted chicks, and an adoption certificate, among other benefits. Each breeding season while there are eaglets in the nest the "Cruzers" and any other eagle lovers pool their resources to adopt nests. They then randomly distribute the adoption benefits among those who have contributed. For instance, if you contributed $25 to the Challenge, you could be drawn to receive the Catalina visit. During the Challenge, we will apply the tax-deductible portion of any contribution to IWS (eg. t-shirts, sweatshirts, eagle adoptions, memberships, ...) towards the Challenge total. Just make sure to let us know that you want your contribution to go towards the 2011 Nest Adoption Challenge (NAC) in the "Add Special Instructions to the Seller" section prior to final checkout – you can use PayPal without having an account. If you forget to add instructions, you can email them to sharpe@iws.org. There is no minimum contribution, but your chances of being drawn increase with the total amount of your contribution(s) made during the fundraiser

As an extra incentive, anyone that contributes at least $25 will receive the photo and adoption certificate for the nest of their choice.

Bette your Eagle coverage was wonderful today as well! :><: With Carole out of town you have your hands full and are doing a superb job! :)^

Penny what a difference a day made in your yard! :8O: It's May! When is Winter going to leave you alone? :dvl:

Thinking of Norfolk Mom today, and have been so heartbroken since her tragic loss. I found this among the many pics I'd saved of her. I've posted it before since struck me at the time that it seemed an eerie image of an Eagle shadow cast across her. It was two years ago, so not an ominous foreboding, but I thought at the time a sign invoking the Great Eagle Spirit she represented. <3

On the occasion of Beltane I wanted to share this historical Crop Circle known as the "Beltane Wheel" because it appeared on Beltane in 1998 in a flowering Canola field. It had amazing numerology, symbology, and spiritual references in the design and placement of it adjacent to ancient Silbury Hill. Silbury Hill is a short drive from where we are and is the oldest manmade pyramid in Europe at about 5,000 years old. The lines in the center and from the parallel tractor lines in the formation are from people walking into the standing crop, and damaging it. :bld: :hair:

Lily the Black Bear - Update May 1, 2011 – 3:53 PM CDT

Lily is her old self!

Posted Image :clk:
red maple buds that Hope was feeding on

It’s like a miracle. It’s like waking up from a bad dream. She had looked so bad. Now she’s her old self. Her appetite is back. She looks good and alert. She has energy. She was the same with us as ever. We didn’t know what to expect when we checked on her. We were prepared for the worst. We took a radio-collar to put on Hope, if she would. In our relief about Lily, we didn’t think to check her nipples for milk and we didn’t even think to snap a picture. We futilely concentrated on radio-collaring Hope. Hope is a girl who knows what she doesn’t want. She anticipates our every move. Will she ever change her mind? We remember the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” We will try again.

We didn’t actually see Faith, but we heard her and Lily hurried off in response to her cries. Studies of Lily, Hope, and Faith will continue.

After our visit with Lily and Hope we checked out their last bed site to see if we could find any clues. No clues to Lily’s illness, but we did find the ground around the tree littered with red maple branches covered with bursting buds. Yesterday when we checked on the family at this same bed site, we spotted Hope high in the red pine pawing at branches of a deciduous tree. Our attention was on Lily so we didn’t think more of it. Now we know the tree she was pawing was a red maple and she was likely feeding on the swollen buds.

Last year green-up was 2 weeks early. Aspen leaves were bursting on April 18. This year green-up is late. Today we have temperatures below freezing and snow flurries. What this will mean for the wild foods this summer remains to be seen.

A good idea came out of the Lily worries. The Education Outreach Team suggested developing a lesson plan on dealing with grief.

Al Burda of Pennsylvania was the lucky winner of Carol Decker’s beautiful drawing of Lily and Hope. Thank you to all who so generously participated, to Carol Decker for the print, and to Team Bear and Patrick McKibbage for making the drawing possible.

In the Readers Digest contest to win money for Ely, we are holding 6th place, voting like mad as people try to catch up or stay ahead of us. The link to vote 10 times in a row each day through May 16 is here.

In the Chase contest to win money for the International Wolf Center, you have us solidly in 3rd place with only 3 days to go. This is the contest where we can vote only once through May 4. To vote, go to this link and click “Like.” Then go to this link and register your vote for the International Wolf Center.

The petition to name the black bear Minnesota’s state mammal has 1,308 votes and is here.

Thank you for all you are doing.
