Aww, Michele :Hugs: what a gorgeous picture of the Salisbury Plains! The Red Poppies here will soon be in bloom!

The past few days have been :hair: :'( , but we did win the Ebay auction for an inexpensive car last night so will soon have wheels! >O< We just have to arrange to pick it up, after spending all day getting the complicated insurance put in place. (US drivers' license, no UK insurance driving record, need for confirmation from my US ins. co.) Then we'll be driving it past the Salisbury Plain to bring it home.

The [expletives] landlord has been causing more :hair: as he told the agency this week we "weren't available" for his repairmen to come fix plumbing problems we reported, but the exact opposite is true! We've been waiting for weeks, not leaving or making plans waiting for them to show up to fix them, and having several appointments with his plumber canceled by him at the last minute, only to have 7.5 liters dripping from our kitchen tap per day and a wet spot molding in the dining room ceiling from a leak in the pipes above! :'( I had to write a detailed document of all the dates and details to send to the agency, who's being "sympathetic", but it seems the landlord has their balls in his pocket! And this house is a nice seeming, neat and well located little habitation on the edge of well heeled countryside estates, not what it might seem from the problems we're having.

And then this came in the email today: Protections lifted on Grey Wolves! :'(

It's been a full day and at after nine here I haven't had dinner yet. :( But if the Ebay car we bought from a dealer is roadworthy we'll soon have wheels at least. :X:

(Edited to remove over the limit Emoticons. Imagine more..)

Thanks Deb, Michele and Cathy!! Kind of my mood for the day - I think all the rain is making me very soulful... haha

Hey I am curious - what background or theme do you all use on this site? At the bottom left corner of every page is a drop-down menu that says "Choose a theme" and my choices are Mellow (white text on dark background) or Zeta Original (black text on white with purple and orange color scheme). I use the Zeta as light text on dark backgrounds absolutely KILLS my eyes after a few minutes!!

Jeanne, as a migraine sufferer I can relate to light/dark screen effects on the eyes, but a dark background is much more eco-energy saving, as the new search engine, Blackle, supports, so I chose the dark one. Dark backgrounds like Blackle's makes more environmental sense. With their black background they claim to have saved 2,454,077.258 Watt hours so far. :ok:

G'day Peeps!
Back from Vietnam, and now at my work desk, a lot to catch up on, blah.

Where is the link for the NAC contribution level?

I missed you all, will catch up soon (after my desk is cleared, which may take a few days)

Peter had the template set on the dark (Nellow) so I just left it that way - yes it's supposed to be more eco friendly :)

HI Ozzie you were missed too

I use the dark teal background. Everyone's photos pop so well with the dark background.

What a cool prize, the incubated "used" egg. Wow, that's a treasure. :)^

Did a bit of gardening, tidied up one and a bit of another flower bed. The sun is out today. :*: Allison cooked supper for us. She's a good cook! :Yum:

Kris, congrats on the car. Your landlord is a real pain. :dvl: Good for you for documenting everything. Now that you have a vehicle you should have a better chance of getting around to look at other places to live. :X:

Michele, I'm glad you liked the wedding photos. That cake was incredibly intricate. Somebody had a very steady hand to do all the details. I liked the photo of Kate's bouquet on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the picture of the blond pageboy looking up at the overhead camera. They were all great.

Ozzie, welcome home! :}^

<::: Storm damaged flight cage allows Norfolk ^"^ ^"^ ^"^ role model to escape :o

Posted Image Posted Image

A flurry of severe thunderstorms in the Shenandoah Valley, many accompanied with wind gusts reportedly approaching 70 mph, caused damage to a newly renovated flight cage at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The limb of a tree outside the enclosure apparently damaged the specialized fabric used for the walls of the 85-foot-long cage which was specifically designed as an exercise space for large raptors, such as eagles and hawks.

There was only one bird in the cage at the time, an adult Bald Eagle, #11-0207, that was admitted to the Center in late March with puncture wounds. Taking advantage of the tear in the side wall, the eagle squeezed through the hole in the fabric and performed what the Center calls a “self-release”.

According to Wildlife Center President Ed Clark, the incident is more frustrating than anything else. “With more than 50 outdoor enclosures, it just figures that the one damaged was the one holding a Bald Eagle. The bird was recovering from her wounds and was flying extremely well — too well, apparently. I guess she just had things to do.” WCV staff think that the bird may well return to her home territory in Gloucester.

The damaged cage is adjacent to the enclosure in which three young eaglets hatched at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens are being held. The adult eagle that escaped was being housed next to the eaglets, primarily to serve as a role model for them. Clark said he wants to assure everyone that the enclosure in which the young birds are being housed is more than secure, since the fabric walls of that space have been reinforced with welded wire fencing. “At no time were the eaglets in any danger, nor were they especially bothered by the storm,” Clark said. “We’re just going to have to find them a new friend”.

The Center says repairs to the large enclosure are underway. In addition to replacing the torn wall panel, all branches and saplings within five feet of the outside of the cage will be cut back. While this was done at the time the cage was constructed, the 15-foot-tall maple tree that caused the damage has grown up since the cage was built. Said Clark, “It just never occurred to us that this three- inch diameter tree could damage the side of the cage, but then it is hard to anticipate weather events like we have recently experienced.”
