Please be aware of a couple of change in the 2011 Nest Adoption Challenge:1. For every nest adopted, any nest that has not been individually adopted and and the chick named, you may choose to name that chick in the NAC awards! 2. As in the past, if your total is at least $25 over the period of the NAC, you will receive a nest adoption photo/certificate as a special Thank You. 3. The 2011 NAC closing date has been changed to June 3 to allow the persons who will be naming chicks, the opportunity watch them online for a bit before the youngsters fledge! 4. AND - Dr. Sharpe will offer as one of the items for you to choose from - a "dirty fake" bald eagle egg that indeed has been incubated by bald eagle parents! It was used a couple of years ago as a replacement egg when IWS removed the real eggs to be incubated and hatched at the IWS nursery! The "fake" eggs were then collected by IWS when the chicks were returned to the nests to be cared for by the parents! :hatch: Please visit the 2nd topic at the IWS Eagle Forum for more information or you can contact me! Thanks! ![]() Click on the egg to go there! |

I agree, Deb. That is one of the best photos ever of K-10. Using an old favourite of my presentation graphics from another year, needed a break after last week's. Just read the Santa Rosa update and the news about a sighting of A-60, the Grassland Nest chick from 2006. I had always hoped he would get together with Cruz. Two historic chicks as adults what a love story that would be. Good morning to everyone. The is out for the second day in a row! I want to get out to do some more work on cleaning up my flower beds.

Cheryl - Beautiful post/graphic and I too that photo of K-10, it's a super action photo. The is shining in NY right now after a day of rain yesterday, but more rain expected over the next day or so. Today is the last day of Shiva so looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet for the remainder of our visit here. Maya has been exceptional with all the people in the house. She barks when the doorbell rings and then visits with everyone bringing them her toys. We've had up to 40 people here at one time so she is going to be so lonesome when we go home, she's a real social butterfly.Close friends and cousins of Bev have been sending in dinner platters so all I have to do is set up the buffet table and we are using plastic and paper dishes which makes it easier. The only people who stay for dinner is the immediate family and a few close friends but it's still about 15 people. So many people have brought cakes, cookies and desserts so today we are sending about 10 boxes to the Veterans place for the nurses to enjoy. We demolished the cheese cake that Deb brought, it's the best one I have ever eaten My donation to the NAC will be done when we get home. I'm so happy I prepared a few promos in advance so don't have to do anything except post them while in NY. See you all later, must go grocery shopping now.

Hi Carole Been thinking of you a lot lately, and was wondering how Maya was doing with all the company. Glad to hear she is enjoying that part of the visit. I'm also glad to hear that so much of the family was able to come and share time together. Family is so important at times like this. |

I must say that Maya is just the cutest What a great thing for the veterans . how wonderful of Bev and the family When my nephew passed some years ago from a car accident, we were overwhelmed with food - people were so kind ...... we too, packaged a ton of it up and took it to the local food bank who truly appreciated it........ Cheryl I agree - I can't wait and hope that next year is the year for Cruz AND that IWS is able to find her "home" once she settles! What a treat that would be! Big meeting at 3 today - more negotiating - and it's here at our office soooooo lots to get done! BBL |

Carole I know first hand how exhausting a Shiva can be...we had morning prayers at the house everyday and had to be up by 6:00am to prepare the table for the minion when they were over...breakfast before the workday began. Our youngest son would go to his room because he was just so distraught with all the people and the 'noise'. After the ritual walk around the block at the end of it all we felt a huge sense of relief. Our Schnauzer used to greet everyone too but she only ever barked at one person...a FedEx guy ![]() to you and your SIL and the family. We are there with you in spirit

It's so good to see the Norfolk are safe because others weren't so lucky ![]() ![]() Eagles killed as twister roared By Cortney Langley Modified:Wednesday, May 4, 2011 8:55 AM EDT Four more homes were lost to the tornado than originally tallied. Four eagle nests were obliterated as the twister jumped the James River and plowed across Kingsmill, Grove and on to Gloucester. Bryan Watts of the Center for Conser vation Biology flew over the James, York and Rappahannock rivers the day after. He found two nests destroyed on Hog Island in Surry, another on Kingsmill’s Wood Course, and a fourth on the Rappahannock. “All of them would have had chicks at this point,” he said this week in an interview. Watts typically flies twice every spring. In late February or early March, he checks existing nests for activity and charts new nests. Then he counts chicks during a March or April “productivity” flight. That had not been completed before the tornado, so it’s unclear how many eaglets were killed. Happily, the live count today exceeds 700 nesting eagle pairs, so the deaths won’t harm the overall population. As for the four who died, “If that had happened in the late 1970s, that would have been the entire bald eagle population in Virginia,” said William & Mary biology professor Dan Cristol. Watts said what was unusual about the Woods Course destruction is that the nest was in a populated area. “Most of the nests are more remote than that,” he said. “Those birds are clearly habituated to people. People are teeing off right underneath that tree.” The nest placement is part of a larger trend of bald eagles settling into more suburban and urban areas as their population recovers. Cristol seconded that. “I can’t look up on campus anymore without seeing an eagle,” he said. |
