The Deer video, which I started to watch then couldn't, is a grim synchronicity to the horrible Deer experience we encountered yesterday on the way to nearby Savernake Forest. Stopped cars ahead on the road were pulled over where beautiful big female Red Deer had been hit and badly injured, but not outright killed, by one of them. We stopped and Ed went to see if he could help, but the police had already been called and it was not possible to move her off the road due to the thick hedgerows along the side. It totally destroyed our day, and the poor Deer's life, and I've had her image in my mind ever since. We just hoped she didn't leave a fawn somewhere in the forest. This one is one of the younger of the centuries old Oak trees in Savernake Forest.

Time for some Alaskan Grizzly aqua-bearobics By DAILY MAIL REPORTER Last updated at 9:24 AM on 9th May 2011 ![]() Images Buck Shreck The salmon runs are annual migrations of the fish that sees them return to the spawning pools where they were born to reproduce. "My experience and knowing what to look for when a bear is getting agitated, nervous or uncomfortable helps a great deal in knowing when I can get close and when I can't. Before those pictures he came on the run towards me. It scared me quite a bit at first, but he stopped 10 feet from me and we looked into each other's eyes." I know you're not supposed to look a bear in the eye because you're challenging them, but it was like he recognised me and started to smell my boots. He reminded me of a puppy dog who just found his master and took off running and bouncing to the other side of the river. For days after that I could take take pictures of him all day long while he was out in the river. Full Article and More Pics |

Hi everybody. I meant to check in yesterday but it was busy here. Chaos ensues for another week at least until Ian and Allison move into their house. Friday night Robert and I went to a buck and doe party. Ian and Allison are in the wedding party and helped to organize and run everything. We've never been to a buck and doe. It was fun. Matthew visited yesterday for Mother's Day and the five of us had supper together. My computer is still acting up. I've ordered another one but it won't be shipped until May 20th. I need this one to last that long. Jill, I loved the photo of you as a child with your puppy. What a treasure to see that picture which you didn't even know existed. Ozzie, glad you were able to help with Rachel's hair problem. Whenever there was an outbreak at school I always felt as if my head was itching like crazy. However, I never did actually have them. Just my imagination in overdrive. Lovely photo of you with your mom and Karen. Kris, congrats on your car. Your countryside photos are lovely. Well done to Anna and Deb on your eagle promos. Both were terrific and a treat to view. |

Lily the Black Bear - Update May 9, 2011 – 10:10 PM CDT Bear business ![]() June's cubs up a birch We visited June and saw her two big cubs climb high to escape us since we spent no time with them during the socialization period (March and early April). However, June was very relaxed and had a heart rate of 74. Today, we replaced Jo’s failed GPS unit and saw that she and her cub are doing great. The cub descended a white pine to nurse, but we still weren’t able to determine its gender. Lily and family were inaccessible today—way out in the boonies doing bear business. ![]() Lynn Rogers taking June's heart rate Juliet is still with her yearlings although the time for family break-up is fast approaching. Family ties are loosening and the yearlings are straying further from Juliet. Today, Juliet’s daughter Sharon was over 100 yards from the rest of the family and her heart rate was 96. The initiative to make the black bear the Minnesota state mammal is gaining steam with some good behind the scenes work. This is the link to show support for the petition. Anyone, anywhere, of all ages can sign it if you have a web address. In the Readers Digest contest to win money for Ely, you still have Ely strongly in 6th place. The link to vote 10 times in a row each day through May 16 is here. A video of energetic Faith was posted today on YouTube. Thank you for all you are doing. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
