Please be aware of a couple of change in the 2011 Nest Adoption Challenge:1. For every nest adopted, any nest that has not been individually adopted and and the chick named, you may choose to name that chick in the NAC awards! 2. As in the past, if your total is at least $25 over the period of the NAC, you will receive a nest adoption photo/certificate as a special Thank You. 3. The 2011 NAC closing date has been changed to June 3 to allow the persons who will be naming chicks, the opportunity watch them online for a bit before the youngsters fledge! 4. AND - Dr. Sharpe will offer as one of the items for you to choose from - a "dirty fake" bald eagle egg that indeed has been incubated by bald eagle parents! It was used a couple of years ago as a replacement egg when IWS removed the real eggs to be incubated and hatched at the IWS nursery! The "fake" eggs were then collected by IWS when the chicks were returned to the nests to be cared for by the parents! :hatch: Please visit the 2011 Nest Adoption Challenge for more information or you can contact me! Thanks! ![]() Click on the egg to go there! |

Eaglepedia Revisited April 21, 2007 In a few short weeks, the nestlings have grown quite big with feathers just beginning to push through their down. Beaks, heads and feet are changing and they begin to look more and more like their parents. The will try to stand on their wobbly legs but fall into a downy heap, trying again and again! Development: Eye shield - the eybrow that grows over the eye socket, creating the classic eagle scowl. The beak develops a hooked, sharp point. The toes develop long, hooked, sharp claws called talons. ![]() AND May 20, 2007 Eaglets will be able to stand and walk about the nest, striking at sticks and grasses with their feet possibly to practice prey catching at about 8 weeks of age! But they aren't predators yet. They will begin to feed themselves and are well feathered, having achieved 90% of their mature weight with female eaglets possibly outweighing their fathers. They are very curious about and aware of their surroundings. At this age, should a human climb a nest tree, the eaglet might jump off trying to escape otherwise they usually hiss and back away, assuming a spread eagle position. "The Bald Eagle" ![]() a mantle! Cruzers It is still dismal (6C/43F) with showers here. Some of you may know that the flood situation is extremely dire and around noon today there will most probably be a controlled breach of the dike just 45 minutes west of us. This is exactly what they did in Missouri....allow water to go where it will do the least damage because of they don't do it the dikes will be breached anyway. So for the people whose homes will be flooded on purpose It's a once in 300 years flood situation.Manitoba Flooding |

The NBG eaglets were caught on Tuesday for their weekly weigh-in and nest-cleaning. Dr. Miranda, wildlife rehabilitator Suzy Doell, and veterinary technician Leigh-Ann Horne each caught up one of the eaglets and placed them in an enclosed tub for weighing. The trio weighed in at: #11-0474: NZ: 4.32 kg (last week was 3.41 kg) #11-0475: NX: 4.1 kg (last week was 3.88 kg) #11-0476: NV: 3.42 kg (last week was 4.015 kg) ![]() NZ.............................................NX............................................NV ![]() Since the eaglets’ activity level has been increasing over the past few days and more time has been spent around the edges of the nest, additional branches were added. Two of these branches will provide a “bridge” over to the stair-step perches that were set up around the sides of their enclosure. NBG Eaglets Weigh In for more pics

So great to hear that wild hatched chick #W1-06 has her own nest this year Cheryl Operation Migration must be so thrilled with that accomplishment.I loved your slideshows of Hanoi and the Halong river area Ozzie. Such a wealth of history in their religious shrines and architecture. The scenic views are so ethereal...I remember seeing those mystical islands in one of the James Bond Movies Too bad about the terrible pollution of the air and water there Japan let some of the residents which were evacuated from around the nuclear reactors back home for a short time to collect some precious belongings. What an ongoing nightmare...nobody seems to be reporting on it much anymore. It is too terrible to even contemplate all the 'fallout' from that disaster

Jeanne, wonderful post! Such a poignant painting. Penny, so sorry to hear about the terrible flooding! Hope they can minimize the damage somehow. Speaking of damage, that miserable ["son of an unwed mother"] landlord of ours has given us notice to move! He's been nasty as since we asked him to fix the nonfunctional shower in December, and after his threats we haven't said anything fearing just this consequence. We thought he couldn't give us notice until September but have learned the agency gave wrong info and there's no tenant protection to help us. He was, at least, required to give us two months notice, but there a hardly any available places, let alone suitable ones. With Ed so unwell and no friends or family we're feeling pretty bad, even though we've been looking for a better place with a kinder landlord, being given notice is very distressing. Don't think I'll be around much with having to search for another place, packing (at least we didn't unpack many of the boxes we shipped fearing this might happen), trying to stay off ledges, and not really up to being too chipper. Some of you may have gotten this email from Defenders of Wildlife but I wanted to post part of it if not, since it deals with someone we'd all have expected more from in light of his fondness for Eagles. ![]() “It’s sad, but true -- TV comedian Stephen Colbert has become a bear bully! And bears are reeling from his onslaught. But now Ed Asner and Defenders of Wildlife are calling him out and fighting back. You can too. Send Stephen a message: There’d be no Col-BEAR without the bear. As if habitat loss and poaching weren’t bad enough, America’s imperiled bears are being viciously and repeatedly attacked by Stephen Colbert. For years, the late night TV comedian has launched attack after unBEARable attack on these magnificent animals. But now, as part of next week’s national Bear Awareness Week, we’re taking the gloves off. And we’re not alone. Entertainment legend Ed Asner is also taking action for bears, and he wants YOU to join him. Check out Ed Asner's special message to Stephen Colbert – delivered as only Ed can – and then take action to join our new ColBEAR Campaign! (Warning: Ed’s language is a little rough, so this video may be inappropriate for younger wildlife supporters.)" (Cloris Leachman has done a similar video) [There was more so I'll skip to this] "Join the ColBEAR Campaign and tell Stephen Colbert to get over his ridiculous fears and stop bullying bears! “ Sign the petition to Stephen Colbert For the Bears, Rodger Schlickeisen President Defenders of Wildlife PS: I lost a whole other version of this post trying to remove weird text characters in the parts quoted from the email so won't try it again. I couldn't do it a third time. Edited by circlescribe, May 11 2011, 09:21 AM.
