Good Morning from the Norfolk and their bear cub visitor ![]() ![]() Screencap annsva Ed Clark wrote: Just what we need, more drama in eagle town! A quick thinking viewer captured a screen shot the shows a little yearling bear cub outside the eagles' cage. I'm sure the fragrance of fish attracted the bear, but it's outside the 8' chainlink fence, so everyone can relax. There is NO threat here; just a really good catch on the infrared camera shot. Dr. Miranda was in at work early and received a call about the bear -- she took a walk up to the eaglet enclosure (with a big stick) ... no bear around. We're in the National Forest, and bears are around! We probably have no idea how often this happens ... since we've never had a cam turned on 24/7 prior to this! No doubt...an attaction for man and beast! Keep in mind that the babies could NOT see the bear if it was dark. The camera can see, using the imfrared light spectrum and the illumination of the new lamp. However, the eaglets cannot see in this light. They may have heard something moving in the leaves, but probably did not see much if the sun had not started to come up. Norfolk Eaglets - May 12 Video by Eaglelover (3:20) |

![]() Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announces the birth of two Black-footed Cat kittens! The kittens, whose sex have yet to be determined, are healthy and doing well with mom, Godiva. They were born April 17 and currently are on exhibit in the nocturnal animal area of the Zoo’s Primate, Cat and Aquatics building. The two kittens are the second litter for Godiva, 4, and her male breeding partner, Wyatt, also 4. Godiva’s first litter produced one kitten, a male, who is now part of a breeding pair at the Louisville Zoological Garden. ![]() Wyatt is considered a genetically valuable animal whose genes and offspring are an important contribution to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for black-footed cats. There are about 18 accredited institutions in North America with black-footed cats. Black-footed cats are the smallest of the African cats, with adults reaching about 3.5 pounds when fully grown. Their conservation status is listed as “vulnerable” in the wild. Black-footed cats are found in the grasslands and savannas of Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. |

Not sure if I posted this before, but it was sent to me by another forum member- This is absolutely beautiful. For those of you who are not from West Texas and may not know, Doug Smith is a gifted pianist and composer from a small town here. His song, West Texas, is played (or at least it used to be if it's not still) at the Omnimax in Lubbock right at the beginning before they start the movie. A few years ago he was in a truck accident that left him paralyzed-I don't know if he is able to play the piano any more. The video " West Texas ", produced by Charlie Stout and featuring the piano music by Doug Smith, is receiving some 2,000 hits per day!! If you have not seen it go to http://wymanmeinzer.com/ and turn the volume up LOUD!! Its about 4 minutes long and you just might not want it to end!!! |

Cute earrings, Jill! A bear cub but likely meant no harm to the eaglets. The cam watcher person sure got a good screen cap, though.Glad everybody liked the trip down Memory Lane with Cruz. I remember how the IWS team told us at some point how worried they were because it took a couple of days for K-10 and K-26 to realize that they needed to feed her! They were such young parents. That dog video just cracked me up .... I wasn't sure if other people would think it was that funny or if it was just me. Godiva, I like that name for the mother cat! |

Topa, the one dog in the JL card looks like a greyhound or whippet. That was fun to watch. Sweet of ES to do the Mother's Day cam sponsorship, Deb. |

Lily the Black Bear - Update May 12, 2011 – 8:09 PM CDT Green-up in full swing! ![]() Rose-breasted Grosbeak Leaves continue to erupt on this cooler day in the 50’s. Northwoods residents will wonder where the bears have gone as the bears fill up on large-leafed aster on the forest floor, aspen leaves in the treetops, and blue-joint grass in the black ash swamps. Jo’s GPS locations today showed her to be foraging along the edge of a black ash swamp, staying within an area only 0.36 miles long all day. Lily was mostly in the uplands, staying within an area only 0.46 miles long. June moved a mile with her 2 big cubs. A video of Faith from May 10 has been posted on YouTube. A story about Lily and Hope will air on WCCO-TV news on Monday evening. A paper on bear attacks is in the Journal Of Wildlife Management Birds are coming north in numbers. A favorite arrived today—the rose-breasted grosbeak. They sing like mellow robins. This one came to the feeder outside the window. The link to show support for making the black bear Minnesota’s state mammal is here. Anyone, anywhere, of all ages can sign it if you have a web address. You don’t have to be from Minnesota to sign it. In the Readers Digest contest to win money for Ely, you still have Ely securely in 6th place (in the money) with only 5 days to go. The link to vote 10 times in a row each day through May 16 is at Readers Digest. Thank you for all you are doing. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
