Rescue of Violet postponed ![]() Updated, 8:15 p.m. | A medical rescue team, which spent Thursday observing Violet, the red-tailed hawk and new mother with an injured leg, decided not to try to take her from her nest high above Washington Square Park in order to treat her. The wildlife specialists said that Violet was functioning well enough — and that the risks to her and her week-old hatchling were serious enough — that intervention could not be justified. After observing Violet on the nest up close for a full day, the team led by the state decided that she was functioning well enough, and that the possible dangers posed by intervention - both to her and the baby - were so great, that the best course of action was not to act. "In the final analysis," said Stephen Zahn, a regional supervisor of natural resources for the State Department of Environmental Conservation, "there was not a medical imperative to intercede on behalf of the bird with such high risks to both her and the hatchling." Elizabeth Bunting, a veterinarian specializing in wildlife from Cornell's School of Veterinary Medicine, said that while Violet was obviously having difficulty using her swollen right leg, which has a metal wildlife band stuck high on the shin, she was using it nonetheless and was still able to extend her toes. And, crucially, she is still able to use her right foot to hold prey while she pulls it apart to feed her baby, or eyas, Dr. Bunting said. Read More NY Hawk Cam |

Another young found shot in Virginia ![]() ![]() On May 11, DGIF Biologist J.D. Klepler responded to a call about an injured Bald Eagle at the Charles City County landfill. He captured the injured bird and DGIF Biologist Steve Living transported it to the Wildlife Center on the same day. Dr. Miranda examined the immature Bald Eagle when it was admitted. She found inflammation in the front portion of the right eye, which meant she was unable to visualize the retina to check for further eye damage. She also found a left femoral fracture in the eagle’s leg. The left carpus, or “wrist”, was also bruised — this could be due to the fact that the eagle was using its wings for balance due to the leg injury. The eagle tested “subclinical” for lead — meaning there is a small amount in the bird’s system, but not at a high enough level to treat. The lead level will be re-checked in several days. Because the eagle was fairly depressed by the end of the physical examination, Dr. Miranda opted not to do radiographs, which would further stress the bird. Instead, she splinted the broken leg and started the eagle on pain medications, fluids, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Surgery was scheduled for the next day. Go here for More details |

Cheryl I neglected to mention how much I enjoyed the NAC walk down memory lane with A-49 Cruz you posted this week. That was so great This was posted on the chat on the Norfolk cam this morning and I was just horrified when I read it Operation Migration has done so much for these birds and in one split second a total ignoramus takes it away ![]() Comment From Stephen in NC: Carolyne there is no test to limit hunting to discerning hunters. When I was young my father ran a locker plant and processed game. A hunter brought in a "strange looking snow goose" with elongated legs and neck. It was a banded Whooping Crane. At the time there were about 28 known to be alive. Confronted with that, the hunter disappeared. That is why some farmers spray paint the word COW on cows before opening day of deer season. |

Is Carole traveling back home this weekend? It's a lot warmer in Toronto today than it is here. We are at 4C/39F. They are at 21C/64F. It actually felt like -3 this morning We might get into the low 60's tomorrow I am so glad I haven't bought a ton of bedding plants yet even though I was sorely tempted to last weekend

We are leaving Monday morning. It's warmer in Toronto than it is here on Long Island but tomorrow we are going into the city to visit with Bev's grandson and his wife and then to Katz's Deli for lunch. Lots of rain predicted for the weekend so won't be doing too much walking around and shopping, oh I can always use an umbrella to shop

![]() AP Image BANGKOK – Authorities at Bangkok's international airport arrested a first-class passenger Friday whose suitcases were filled with baby leopards, panthers, a bear and monkeys. The animals had been drugged and were headed for Dubai. In Thailand, leopards and panthers fetch roughly $5,000 a piece on the black market, but their value in Dubai is presumably higher. It was not known if the animals were destined to be resold or kept as exotic pets, a practice popular in the Middle East. Read More |

![]() Good Friday the <Ahem> 13th Peeps....... Topa, I loved, loved, loved everything about your NAC post this morning....but "Wilderness Without Limits" struck a chord with me. Outstanding!!! Carole, what a bummer about it being rainy in LI....I'm with you, I could shop in spite of the rain....just give me a jacket with a hood, and I'm good to go...... Penny, sooooo many good things you've posted today....and all of it good reading. Although it broke my heart to read of yet another BE having been shot.....on the flip side, I got a good chuckle out of the farmer who painted "COW" on his, uuuuhhhh cow..... However, I'm appalled by the moron who drugged and placed baby leopards, panthers, a bear and monkeys in his luggage. Those poor babies are lucky to have survived that. That just infuriates me!!! I hope this individual gets the book thrown at him!!! |
