![]() ![]() ~excerpt from "The Eagle, Our National Emblem"~ by Maude M. Grant~ ![]() When those fighting men looked up into the sky that early morning in 1775, it is estimated that there were around 300,000 to as many as 500,000 Bald Eagles to be found in lower 48 contiguous states. By the mid 1950’s, through loss of habitat and the use of DDT, that number had been reduced to no more than 412 nesting pairs. In 1967 the Bald Eagle was placed on the Endangered Species list, and by 1972 the use of DDT was banned in the United States. Through these efforts the Bald Eagle, with the help of many organizations like the Institute for Wildlife Studies, has seen a remarkable recovery. With just a little bit of effort, you too can make a difference to the future of the American Bald Eagle by contributing Today through June 3, 2011. You DO NOT Have To Be A Forum Member To Contribute. Any visitor to the forum, any observer of the nests, any lover of Eagles, you are all welcome to help support the IWS effort! 13 Snake-Necked Turtle Babies Swim in to Denver Zoo![]() Thirteen Reimann's (RYE-man's) Snake-Necked Turtles have hatched at Denver Zoo. The almost fully-aquatic, freshwater species can only be found in Papua New Guinea. As their name indicates, they are known for their long necks, so long that they aren't able to fully pull their heads into their shells. Instead they wrap their necks around the front and sides of their shell to provide predators less of a target. Though adults can grow to more than 10 inches long, the hatchlings are all about the size of a quarter. Some of them may soon be seen in Tropical Discovery's nursery. ![]()

Topa, those Snake-Necked Turtles are adorable!!! Our family (me) went through a turtle phase. When my #1 ds was about 8 years old, my parents bought him a $15 turtle.....which when all was said and done, cost us over $600 in vet bills. That's how I first met Vicki Joseph. Within months of having her (turtle....not Vicki), we realized that she had pneumonia......which meant, she couldn't hibernate in the winter.....I nursed her through the winter and into the following summer. After her, we had a pond turtle wander into our cul-de-sac.....and another one who the neighbor's dog had chewed on.....we kept them for awhile, but then we returned them to the pond where they came from.....which is tricky. Turtles are territorial, but given that we didn't know exactly which portion of the pond was theirs, we just had to trust that they could figure that out on their own.
