Just returned from a very hectic day in NY City, and walked around Soho with zillions of people shopping, a bit too much action for me. Had a great lunch at the famous Katz's Deli with great niece, nephew and Bev. We left Maya at their apartment with their little maltese, Janina, the girls got along so well. Maya is definitely not a city dog, no grass anywhere and she wouldn't do her business on the street and had an accident in the house, thank goodness they have wood floors and not carpet. It's good to be back at Bev's and can't wait to go to sleep. Alan has caught a cold and is not a happy camper, men.......when they have a cold they act like it's pneumonia. :D

Jill
- Happy to hear that George is on the road to recovery.

Kris - The house looks charming, hope it all works out for you and Ed. :X:

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped
at a roadside restaurant for lunch.
After finishing their meal, they left the
restaurant, and resumed their trip.

When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly
left her glasses on the table, and she didn't
miss them until they had been driving for
about forty minutes.

By then, to add to the aggravation, they
had to travel quite a distance before
they could find a place to turn around,
in order to return to the restaurant to
retrieve her glasses.

All the way back, the elderly husband
became the classic grouchy old man.
He fussed and complained, and scolded
his wife relentlessly during the entire
return drive. The more he chided her,
the more agitated he became
He just
wouldn't let up for a single minute.

To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant.
As the woman got out of the
car, and hurried inside to retrieve her
glasses, the old geezer yelled to her,

"While you're in there, you might as well
get my hat and the credit card."

This coming week is National Senior Mental
Health Week. You can do YOUR part by
remembering to contact at least one
unstable Senior to show you care.

I have now done MY part.

Posted Image Everyone for all your wonderful :bday: greetings.

I really appreciate them all :)^

Cheryl that is such a cute Hope and Lily card <3 it and the Yorkie from Carol is so sweet too. They are all beautiful just like all of you :Hugs:

Oh Kris that house looks soooo English :D I feel so bad that you have to make a 'rush' decision because you are probably right about the winter :o On the other hand it has a lot of charm...I would try to find out just how much traffic goes past there each day as that could have a big impact on your daily stress level.

Poor Maya. I'm sure she was mortified to go in the house when she has been trained to go outside. Siobhan was the exact opposite...she wouldn't go on the grass because she was used to concrete/hard surfaces rofl Soho shopping on a Saturday must be crazy crowded. Hope Alan feels better soon Carole :X:

Jill that was so fortunate you took George to the vet right away. Poor guy, I'm sure he will be feeling a lot better very soon. You are a good kitty Mama ;)

So sorry about your problems with your Dad Linda. As long as you do what you feel is right for yourself you will have no regrets later on :Hugs:

Lily the Black Bear - Update May 14, 2011 – 9:18 PM CDT

Faith will be fine

Faith licking Lily

When Sue left Lily, Hope, and Faith after 4 hours of observation today, she said to herself, “Faith is going to make it!”

It was an idyllic scene of play, nursing, grooming, resting, and easy foraging. Lily has her milk back. Food is everywhere, and Faith is a growing little ball of energy and initiates play with Hope and Lily.

The first couple weeks of green-up may be ‘the best of times’ as the videos we share over the next few days will show. Videos will be posted on YouTube.

Lily nursing Hope and Faith

Sue came on the scene, the same place the family was yesterday, and found 17 scats surrounding the big red pine that is their refuge tree. They are eating well. Large-leafed aster is dropping off the menu in favor of lush green grass and new shoots of pea vine (Lathyrus spp.). With plenty of food and Lily in good health, her breasts are swollen again. Hope and Faith nurse peaceably side by side, their steady sucking motions indicating a good flow of milk. This was a welcome sight after the flaccid nipples and hesitant nursing we saw after Lily was sick. We feared what she might do if she wasn’t producing milk. Now, all seems well.

Lily, Hope, and Faith sleeping

A major activity was Lily grooming Faith and Hope. Faith lay on her back with her eyes closed as Lily went over her body inch by inch delicately removing ticks with her incisors. Lily moved Faith into new positions to reach new areas while a relaxed Faith let herself be pulled and pushed without a peep or a look. Then it was Hope’s turn to be groomed with the same reaction from Hope.

A problem, though, was that Faith tried to get in on Hope’s turn, pawing and licking at Hope’s face and Lily’s face.

Faith often initiated play with Hope or Lily. She is getting more independent, exploring away from the two. At one point while Lily was grooming Hope, Faith busied herself tearing apart a rotten stump. She didn’t appear to get any food from it, but her attention span was remarkable.

Sue recorded a peaceful, gentle, playful, and, if we may say so, loving family.

June might have been doing about the same as Lily. She and her two cubs stayed within a diameter of less than 300 yards.

Jo and her cub spent periods in small areas but through the day covered over 1.1 miles. At this moment she is only 131 yards from the residential streets of the town of Tower, which is nearly as close as the shouting distance we mentioned in last night’s update when we found her 93 yards from the town of Soudan last summer. We have not heard any complaints about her, so she seems to know her limits.

Juliet and her 3 yearlings are still covering ground—over a mile and a half today. Juliet’s territory now includes the area where Jo was a couple years ago. As we write this, Juliet is passing the town of Soudan about 300 yards away in the woods. Juliet (8) has been skirting Tower and Soudan much of her life. Her dens the last four winters have been within a mile of one or the other of those towns.

Part of the study is documenting how bears adapt as more and more people move into bear habitat.

The link to show support for making the black bear Minnesota’s state mammal is here. Anyone, anywhere, of all ages, can sign it if you have an email address.

In the Readers Digest contest to win money for Ely, you still have Ely securely in 6th place (in the money) with only 2 days to go. The link to vote 10 times in a row each day through May 16 is at Readers Digest.

Thank you for all you are doing.

A belated Happy Birthday Penny (well, its past your bedtime and evening for me!)

G'day Peeps!! My Sunday, it was a perfect autumn to early winter day today. Slept late bc I didnt feel well last night, bad headache, I think I'm fighting a cold. We had dinner at Epoque, a Belgian Beer specialty restaurant. It was so-so, but the company was great, John & Johanna with Suellen & Ian, friend of Bob & mine respectively. Then we walked to the North Sydney Leagues Club for the amateur theater group Monique belongs to whose 'The Trekkers' (about the annual outback Australia car race) which was in aid of the Royal Flying Doctors Service. It was definitely amateur, but we had a lot of fun.

Today we were out to lunch with Bob's sons and their partners for the eldest Birthday. Brian is now 30, a nice young man. Engineer with Rail. He has a Yankee gf, Madeline who is into plants and gardening, my kinda gal! WE went to a Brazilian Churros restaurant in seaside Brighton, the service was so-so, food better and the special desert of Bom Alaska was fantastic.

Great bit of news for rental Kris... :)^ :X: it works out, I love the place!

Sorry to hear about George. but you were right there for him and he is find. My Tiger has been not coming home at night. One night I went searching and he was a half a block away down the laneway (alley) under a car.... Again, last night he didnt come home. This morning I found a dead rat in the garden... so now I know why he hasnt been coming home and hanging out in the car park (next to the trash cans!). Naughty boy. (and yuck poor rat).

Michele, love lovely NAC presentation this morning, really captures the national pride for the BEs, thank you for posting

How fun Carole, shopping in NYC Soho!

Love the mustang car! WoW

Tomorrow is a workday for me. Somehow I find I have more time to follow the chat than on the weekend, so see you all there.
