Nest Update Blackwater Osprey Cam

05/29/11:
Chick Alert!

We think we see three little heads and no eggs left in the nest.
We'll keep an eye out for a clearer shot of all three together.

Wow Three chickees! thanks for the update Carole

When BBob & I walked to the City yesterday, we walked across the Bridge which ends at an historic area called The Rocks. Sydney Cove was the birthplace of English Australia, where Captain Cook planted the flag. That place is across the cove. Anyway, its an old area and at the bottom of the Bridge was this huge tree (we couldnt ID the specie). Bob pointed out the roots. the roots had moved the old sandstone wall blocks, its probably the original settlement foundation stone.....

Eaglepedia Revisited

May 13, 2008

Contour feathers cover a bird's body, streamlining it for flight and keeping the bird warm and dry. Though they appear to cover the entire body, contour feathers grow only in patches, called pterylae, on most birds' bodies. Contour feathers have a vane, a shaft, and a quill. The vane is held together by thousands of tiny barbs. If the vane splits, the bird can "zip" it back up by pulling it through his beak. To preen its feathers, a bird first oils its bill at a special oil gland found at the base of the tail, and then by pulling individual feathers through its oily beak, each feather is "zipped up" and waterproofed. A bird must preen its feathers often in order to stay warm and dry, and in order to fly.

AND

Because all juvenile feathers are grown at once—a tremendous energy burden to the developing bird—they are softer and of poorer quality than the equivalent feathers of adults, which are moulted over a longer period of time (as long as several years in some cases). As a result, they wear more quickly.

AND

May 16, 2008

In general, juveniles have feathers which are narrower and more sharply-pointed at the tip. This can be particularly visible when the bird is in flight, especially in the case of raptors. The trailing edge of the wing of a juvenile bird can appear almost serrated, due to the feathers' sharp tips, while that of an older bird will be straighter-edged. The flight feathers of a juvenile bird will also be uniform in length, since they all grew at the same time. Those of adults will be of various lengths and levels of wear, since each is moulted at a different time.

adult - clean line of feathers

juvenile - not quite so neat

My nephew is currently serving in the Air Force and is in the K-9 unit.

These wonderful dogs are so important and they "serve" faithfully. Bryan lost his first dog while in Iraq.

On Monday night, look overhead about 10 p.m. to see brilliant orange Arcturus. The handle of the Big Dipper points directly south to Arcturus- the fourth brightest star in the sky. The name of the star derives from Ancient Greek Arktouros and means "Guardian of the Bear".

In Greek mythology, Arcturus is a star created by Zeus to protect the nearby constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. The Guardian of the Bear star sits in Bootes, a constellation that looks like a kite with Arcturus at the bottom and two bright stars flanking each side of Arcturus, east and west.
