Eaglepedia Revisited July 10, 2007 The down of the eaglet is quickly covered by a dark coat of outer fathers which is not molted until after the bird reaches 1 year of age. Over the next 4-5 years, there is a considerable variation of plumage color and pattern. Some of the young eagles (subadults) can be very dark while others can be extremely light! They have dark bills at the base and a dark cere and with age, the bill and cere will turn a dirty yellow. A 2 year old may have a dark or dull yellow bill with an adult bird having a bright yellow bill and cere. The eyes of a subadult will be gray to brown but turn yellow when they become sexually mature. AND July 11, 2007 Juveniles eagles have similar coloring of feathers as their parents but lack the precise pattern of the adult and is often confused with the Golden Eagle species. However, the primary flight feathers and tail feathers are several inches longer than those of an adult which make him appear larger than his parents. The longer feathers provide more surface area which helps the young eagle while they learn to fly. The adult has a white head and tail with a dark body (around the age of 5 years). This change in plumage can happen at 4 years of age but you may occasionally find an adult with a dark head at the age of 9 years! Once they molt to the adult plumage, that is the color they will remain throughout their life! ![]() Young Cruz - juvenile in flight - juvenile example - K10 & 26 (adult example - discussing who gets to stay on the nest) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Kris please pop in and let us know how things are going. Did Lady manage to hatch any of her eggs? The 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding' series has arrived on TLC here. I was mesmerized by those over the top wedding gowns I was at the electrified dress that had the designer standing by with a fire extinguisher, just in case, and the little girl at her first communion with a tiara and all the rhinestones on her face, and a dress she could barely walk in because it was so heavy. Those girls are all so young to be married but I guess they don't have much else to look forward to. I was quite shocked that one couple was trailer shopping and said they didn't want a washroom in it because of their 'outdoor potty only' tradition and that bride-to-be wasn't even brought up as a gypsy Their plight is really unconscionable though...Travelers have no permanent place to call their own and when they do settle somewhere their shelters are torn down and they have to leave again even if they want to end their nomadic lifestyle. Very sad something cannot be worked out with the local governments. |

Buddy Update - May 23 from Claire Thain biggerBuddy has been doing very well with getting used to being in the passageway behind his enclosure. The mailbox perch has been very helpful with keeping him comfortable while being in this new space – actually, it didn’t take Buddy long to adjust and realize that this area isn’t so scary after all! Buddy has been doing so well that I decided that he was ready for the next big step. Last week, we began working on walking through the door from the passageway … and then a few steps into the outside world! To help him with this next transition, his mailbox perch was moved outside, several feet away from the door. This “safety net” should help Buddy stay comfortable as he gets used to being outside of both enclosures. The daily routine now will consist of bringing Buddy out of his enclosure into the passageway on the glove – with the leash securely attached to his jesses. We’ll then be working on walking through the back door of the passageway. The mailbox perch will remain several feet away, in case Buddy would like to hop to it for a quick break. The end goal is getting closer — exposing him to the outside world and getting comfortable seeing people around him while he sits on the glove! |
