Eaglepedia Revisited June 15, 2007 As feathers begin to appear on the chicks, they will begin preening regularly. They will begin to grasp things with their talons, peck at prey and cast pellets (a collection of indigestible parts that they will regurgitate), at about 4 weeks of age. 5 weeks of age they scream loudly and stand pretty well! They next move on to stealing and monopolizing the food in the nest and exercising begins - 2 months of age. Around 9 weeks of age they may begin to perch on branches around the nest and at 11-12 weeks, they will fledge, flying from the nest! Only about 50% of the eaglets hatched in a season will make it through their first year and fewer than that will make it to adulthood in the fifth or sixth year. http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/cgi-bin...nlarticle_id=47 ![]() (photo courtesy Paula 6/14) AND May 18, 2007 Birds, when preening, will gather a special oil from their preen gland, rich in waxes, fatty acids, fat, and water, and spread it over their feathers to clean them but to also keep them moist and flexible. This action also helps their insulation capabilities and waterproofs them. This action also helps control germs and lice that live on their skin and in their feathers. http://www.backyardnature.net AND Lice have been parasites on birds since the beginning of time, probably even annoying dinosaurs! Fleas are new to the scene of pestering the birds, hopping on and off! The world now has about 8,500 species of birds and 25,500 species of feather-eating lice. Nearly every bird has a few lice, and some have thousands. As soon as infant birds climb out of their eggs, the lice hop on and begin chewing their feathers and nibbling their skins. Good morning, everybody. I hope those who have been under the weather .... Topa, Carole, Linda, Deb, Bette, and anybody else I've missed ..... are feeling at least a bit better today. Yesterday was a beautiful day here. It wasn't as hot, nice for gardening. We also had a little family supper to celebrate Matthew's 30th birthday. It was actually on May 31st but he had to stay late at work that night. I'm going to go back and read yesterday's posts. Just wanted to give kudos to Jeanne for completing her NAC presentations. She completed her last posts by having a horse race to the post - very appropriate and certainly grabbed my attention over in nest obs. Well done, Jeanne! Enjoy your day, everyone. |

I'm feeling a little bit better today. Slept well last night, which always helps. I'm able to function ok at work with the help of DayQuil. Deb and Carole - I hope you are feeling better, too! Beautiful NAC presentation today, Cheryl. Each and every one of them has been wonderful this year. Each one of you has your own style and "flavor", and they have all been so enjoyable. From the donations, it looks like they have been mighty effective, too. I know it takes a lot of time to make the postings, and I want to thank you all!

Thank you, Carole, Linda and Topa about my presentation. Linda, thank you very much for your thoughtful words for the NAC team. You're right, it's a huge time commitment in several ways but we don't mind doing it because of our love for the eagles. I'm glad you all seem to be feeling a bit better today. Topa I love the fireworks. Speaking of it's time for me to have my 11 am coffee (I'm in slow gear I guess) and then get some gardening done. Trying to do just a bit at a time. If I could just gently convince DH to fix his power washer so that the deck could be done I'd be r-e-a-l-l-y happy. Can hardly wait for the Sauces banding!

CDN, I think your coffee NAC post is a great " wake up " call that we only have two days left to make a contribution to the NAC! I think I'm going to have to watch the Sauces banding from work using fraps. Whatever,
