I'm happy to hear that ES is on his way home to your today, Deb! What an amazing experience for the boys - it is wonderful that there are people like you and ES who are willing to work with these kids and mentor them like you do. I'm sorry that there were issues with a few of them and that one of your tents was ruined. |

Kestrel in Blue ![]() A Voice as Bad as Conscience - Reflections of a Wild Artist July 18 The Explorer ‘There is no sense in going further–it’s the edge of cultivation,’ So they said, and I believed it–broke my land and sowed my crop– Built my barns and strung my fences in the little border station Tucked away below the foothills where the trails run out and stop; Till a voice as bad as Conscience, ran interminable charges On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated– so; ‘Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges– ‘Something lost behind the ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!’ God took care to hide that country till He judged His people ready, Then He chose me for His Whisper, and I've found it, and it's yours! Yes, your "Never-never country" -- yes, your "edge of cultivation" And "no sense in going further" -- till I crossed the range to see. God forgive me! No, I didn't. It's God's present to our nation. Anybody might have found it, but -- His Whisper came to Me! - Rudyard Kipling from his poem “The Explorer” written in 1898 when Kipling was 33. Heron Dance.org |

I am always surprised that people generalize that scouts are the perfect kids (not saying that's what you think Linda) But they are boys after all - teenage boys at that! And there are good, bad, some with attitude - well like I said teenage boys! We try to use scouting as the tool it is meant to be: 1. to teach the boys responsibility 2. to teach the boys to understand the consequences of their choices/actions 3. to teach the boys to get along and work together one issue gary had was 2 boys from the same troop - with some "attitude" - they didn't want to do their share of the work on the trek - one expected that everyone should respect him because he's almost 18 (an adult in scouting) and he just finished his eagle project gary had looooooong talk with him about respect, leading by example, what eagle scout means, etc. how much did he hear? who knows - maybe once he's home, some of the "talk" will hit home........ the tent - it was just horseplay but a couple of the guys were "older" scouts who definitely should have stopped it or moved the play to a safe area away from the tents and gear ....... so now all will have to pay for the tent ....... like I said, there's always consequences for our actions....... lesson learned! ANYWAY - turns out gary has 3 extra scouts on the bus to ABQ - they have medical issues so can't hike with their crews (I didn't even ask where the kids were from - not any of ours) If a kid or adult can't pass the physical or gets injured - they send them home on the first available flight........ One of the kids is 18 and considered an adult but in scouting you have to have 2 adults ..... so they turned the 3 over to Gary as the "other adult" - he'll deliver the 3 boys to Southwest Airlines to get them checked in and on their way home and then he'll run to his gate and get his 22 folks checked in and ready to come home - whew! |

Have a safe trip home, Gary. That's too bad that the older boys made such poor choices about not being positive leaders. I hope this is a lesson learned so that something good can come out of it. Robert has taken my card for Bette to the postal sorting station so that it will go out at 1 pm. Thanks for noticing the separate threads yesterday, Topa. Thank you for combining them, Deb. I didn't see yours, only the Saturday one when I started. Sorry about the mix-up. I hope Bob is feeling better today, Ozzie. Kris, I really liked all your rock pictures. I love rocks and old formations like those. Some people have built some Inukshuks in a natural area near us ..... not nearly as old as the formations you were exploring, though, Kris. Carole, that is good news that your mother is getting up and around a bit, so glad that she is improving. Sorry that you've caught a cold again, no fun to have one while you are trying to be a support to your mom and sister. I put on a meditation CD and the dogs have settled right down ..... peace and quiet. We got a tiny amount of rain last night but the sun is back with a vengeance this morning. Hugs to all as I know you are all feeling so sad and shocked.
