![]() July 27 We are travelling with tremendous speed toward a star in the Milky Way. A great repose is visible on the face of the earth. My heart's a little fast. Otherwise, everything's fine. - Bertolt Brecht, The First Psalm, translated by Robert Bly The earth (and the sun) are moving at about 43,000 miles an hour in the general direction of a star we’ve named Vega in the constellation Lyra. The solar system moves in concert with other stars in our neighborhood of the Milky Way galaxy – the closest of which is 25 thousand billion miles away. Our sun, and thus the earth, is also spinning in a big circle around the Milky Way. One complete orbit takes about 225 million years. Since the world was formed, it has traveled around the galaxy twenty times. Since humans first evolved about 200,000 years ago, the earth has barely moved in relation to the rest of the galaxy. Humanity is pretty insignificant in the greater scheme of things. Otherwise, everything’s fine. herondance.org |
