Ed Clark, WCV: BREAKING NEWS It appears that NX has been picked up and taken back to ReHab ![]() She first flew into the trees, then she ended up in a field beyond the trees. The heat would not have been an issue except that NX really fought the handlers... Even when Steve Living was ready to release her, he said she fought him constantly.... She bit the heck out of Jeff Cooper, the DGIF biologist who attached the transmitter. She had normally been the quiet one, which was why we picked her for the tracker... She showed her stuff today.... AFTER THAT, the heat became an issue. She needs to recover for a few more days before they set her free again. ![]() That's Dr. Dave holding onto her again. She will put back in the same pen, with KS...the bird that had been in with the Rock Stars before. There will only be the two of them, but we'll have them on our cam in the morning. NX Returns to WCV for story and video

Penny I had a bad feeling when seeing her panting like she was while being held before release, and then flew low into the trees! That didn't look good. I'm so glad she was recovered and is going to rehab, and was not found hurt or worse later.

Kris I edited my post and put in the story of what happened... NX was chosen to wear the harness because she tolerated handling better than the other eagles and because female eagles normally grow larger and stronger. "NX wasn't injured and she was flying well, but she just didn't gain enough altitude," said Stephen Living, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. "It was a hot day and she was just hot and tired. We decided not to stress her any more today. We'll give her a chance to get used to the transmitter and try again later," said Living. Living said that the transition from an enclosure to the outdoors may have been disorienting to an eagle which has spent the last three months under a roof. "These birds haven't had a whole lot of vertical in their world," said Living. He added that a lack of wind today may have also hindered the bird's ability to gain alititude. |

Ed Clark, WCV: on the transmitter The tracker on NX was no factor whatsoever in her getting winded this afternoon, not directly. It was the extra handling.... When a bird is handled, her body pumps adrenalin... and her struggle against the handlers produced lactic acid in her muscles. When the adrenalin dissipates, only the lactic acid is left... sort of like after you run five miles...get your runner's high, but are then left exhausted for a 24 hours or so.. That is what's happening here. At the point we were ready to release NX, she had apparently already gotten herself into a snit.... she had fought, and bit, and struggled the whole time they were putting the transmitter on her. We picked her because we thought she was the quiet normal one... It turns out that she could probably have kicked booty on the rest of them.. If she had been put on the ground, there would have been no difference whatsoever. |

Thanks for trying to get some live of the releases today Carole I didn't even bother trying because the feed was so choppy, freezing every other minute. I figured I'd wait for the papparazzi to post their close-ups instead ![]() I wonder if Deb is seeing any at scout camp ![]() I'm also wondering if Pepsi Mom was up for the challenge
