Whooper Update:- a portion of Joe Duff's most recent entry on fledging

"If you look at all the hatch dates since we began this project and compare them to the fledge dates, you find that it takes an average of 96.3 days for our birds to be able to fly past the end of the runway. Our oldest bird hatched on April 28th so it should have fledged on August 2nd and the youngest reached that stage on Thursday of this week.

Between the youngest and oldest birds this year we have an age range of 16 days. Unlike past years, when we would divide into smaller cohorts, this year we are training all the birds together in the largest cohort yet, and there is a 16 day difference in their ability. When they charge out of the pen after the aircraft, some of them simply can’t go past the end of the runway. And when the majority of the flock stops short, it’s not surprising that the older birds also stop. Sticking together is a natural instinct but the urge to fly trumps staying on the ground - even if all your friends are there. It will only be a matter of time before they stop looking over their shoulders at their flockmates and give in to the exhilaration of flying - Trust me, I can relate.

Like with most things, the answer is patience. It took me a lot longer than 96 days to learn how to fly well and but it was certainly worth the wait."

Cheryl - Thank you for posting Joe's whooper update. #2-11 is quite the little flyer :)^ , I hope the rest of the cinnamon buns follow this leader :X:

Tomorrow Alan and I are going over to Penny's hotel with Maya. I am looking forward to meeting Penny, Allan and Siobhan. We will have dinner with them either in their hotel or we will go out.

Visited with Mom today and she was really in a happy mood. I picked up some sandwiches for the both of us as it is a nice change for her from hospital food. Then Alan picked me up at the hospital and took me shopping for Mom. Lucked out at Sears with new slippers and undies for her.

We are now back at the hotel and are meeting GS Jason and his girlfriend for a Greek dinner. We found this little family restaurant not too far from the hotel and the food is great and not expensive at all. This will be a good break for us and a fun visit with GS.

Will report in again tomorrow, I need a catnap now :Zz:

Those are some gorgeous flowers, Ozzie! Your spring must come about the same time ours does here in New Mexico. Once we hit February 15, it begins looking a lot like spring.

The thalictrum is so pretty, Jill. It looks like a periwinkle shade of baby's breath. I don't think I've seen it here but will keep an eye out. I would like a frog sculpture like that!

Carole, the Greek dinner with your grandson Jason and his GF will give you a good opportunity to catch up with everything going on in his life. You must have been pleased with your shopping excursion for things for your mother. Enjoy your visit with Penny, Allan and Siobhan. That will be so cute to see the two Yorkies meeting each other. I think it's really neat how you and Penny have been able to get together in Montreal.

Ozzie, your flowers are so bright and cheerful. New blooms in the spring always perk people up after a long winter. Thanks for sharing your garden pictures.

Ian and Allison came over for spaghetti dinner. It was nice to have a visit with them. The pups went berserk over Allison since they haven't seen her for about a month.

Just got off the phone with Bette. She said to say hi to everyone.
She loves all the beautiful blue pictures everyone posts for her, and appreciates all the candles and prayers!
Her expensive glasses are no longer helping with the double vision and has her quite frustrated.
Can't say as I blame her there at all! :Hugs:

Said she'd had a rather quiet day today, but was still tired and ready for bed.

:Hugs: Posted Image :Hugs:

:Zz: Sweet dreams, Bette! :Zz:
