just reading an article in paper - it is believed that 6 folden eagles were killed at a wind farm in southern CA - the incidents are being investigated to indeed determine if the turbines were the cause then it goes on to state: fish & wildlife estimate 400,000 birds are killed each year by turbines turbine people say more like 150,000 it was reported wind farms kill fewer birds than the estimated 100 million that fly into glass buildings 500 million killed by cats 10 milion by power lines 11 million by automobiles 1 loss is too many |

turbines are bad for birds. Artsy, here are a few snagged photos of the video. (On my walk this morning I taped leaflets on mailboxes on this street.) From Sue Williamson Here's a video taken last night (Sat. 8/27) 11:30 pm on Thacher just past Krishnamurti's. Over 21 garbage bins there...an all-you-can-eat buffet for bears! We need to get busy on this area! Note from Suza: What will it take for the resiidents in the east end to get bear-proof trash cans or keep containers in garage until jst before the trash truck comes? Another shooting? Please tell your east end friends this is serious and must be addressed NOW! 21 garbage cans residents fill daily that sit on the street for a week. Sue stalked the bear. to help save the bears. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

oh topa when will people ever learn ![]() there's a long winding road thru the smokey mts. and as a kid (and when I had my family) we visited there all the time and it was guaranteed to see bears because there were pull offs where you could stop - have picnic - dump your garbage - and who would show up - the bears...... but some years ago - the park service finally got rid of the pull offs and got rid of the garbage cans and only at designated areas, they put bear proof containers. now you rarely see bears in the park ...... good for the bears!!! |

smokey mt info: All black bears in the park are black in color, but in other parts of the country they may be brown or cinnamon. They may be six feet in length and up to three feet high at the shoulder. During the summer months, a typical male bear weighs approximately 250 pounds while females are generally smaller and weigh less slightly over 100 pounds. However, bears may double their weight by the fall. Bears over 600 pounds have been documented in the park. Wild bears can live 12-15 years or more. "Panhandler" bears, who have had access to human foods and garbage, have a life expectancy of only half that time. |

WCV now has the cam on Broad-Winged Hawks... http://wildone.org/eaglecam/wildlife-center-web-cam/ ![]() Broad-winged Hawks PATIENTS: Broad-winged Hawks, #11-1434 & #11-1568 CAUSE OF ADMISSION: Orphaned PROGNOSIS: Good On June 20, some hikers found a young Broad-winged Hawk on the ground after a storm at Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County. The hawk was taken to permitted rehabilitators, who in turn sent the young bird to the Wildlife Center on June 24. The Broad-winged Hawk, patient number 11-1434, was basically healthy, though had some debris in both of its ears — likely from being blown around in the storm and being on the ground for a few days. On July 4, a permitted rehabilitator in Roanoke admitted a young Broad-winged Hawk that was found on the ground. Without a known nest around, the hawk was admitted to the Wildlife Center the following day. Patient 11-1568 was also a mostly healthy young bird — and was just treated for parasites. The young hawks were paired up — as it’s always best to raise young wildlife with a “sibling”. It’s also best for young raptors to look at an adult role model, if possible — so education ambassador Grayson, a Broad-winged Hawk, was tapped for the job. When the hawks first arrived, they spent time in a crate in Grayson’s enclosure each day. As the young hawks began to mature, they were moved to their own outdoor patient enclosure and were able to start making small flights. At the end of July, they were moved into a larger flight enclosure to practice flying. The rehabilitation staff anticipate that these hawks will be released by mid-September. |

G'day Peeps, My Wednesday hump-day, warming, scattered cloud, maybe a slight chance of rain and a RACE SAIL day! My little Tigsy isnt feeling well, he wouldnt go outside this morning and he is usually at a sprint start position for the door. His nose is a little warm and dry too. So I left him in and Leo went out for the day. I hope he isnt getting a UTI, he is prone to them. Well, my news from DownUnder is as of tomorrow I will be officially divorced from Rex, fortunately we have remained friends. Tomorrow is my sister's Birthday, the next day my surrogate Father's birthday, then 2 days later my favorite cousin's birthday, then Rachel's birthday. Lots of Sept birthdays! Deb, so sorry to hear your multiple bad news.... makes one indeed live each day to the full. Is the car able to be fixed Kris? what is wrong with it? I hate car repairs. Hows the new premises working out? group hugthanks for the WC link Cheryl, inspiring isnt it! for the hawks!HIYa Bette! ![]() |
