Loneliest seal in the world, shunned by her colony for being ginger, is now the centre of attention at Russian zoo.

Things are looking up for the little ginger-coloured seal pup whose fate touched the world after being rejected by the rest of its sleek black family.

Left as an outcast, the vulnerable creature was found huddling under a pile of logs on Tyuleniy Island in the far east of Russia.

Photographer Anatoly Strakhov, 61, took heartbreaking pictures of the world's loneliest seal, which would have been unable to survive in the wild.

Named Nafanya - after a lookalike Soviet cartoon character - the seal was given VIP treatment and has now moved into a plush new home at the country's leading aquarium.

Nafanya was taken on a 7,890-mile odyssey to the Russian mainland and then by special plane to Adler, near Sochi on the Black Sea coast, where she is rapidly becoming a star attraction.

Yulia Frolova, head of the Akvatoria dolphinarium - Nafanya's new home, said: 'She now has a special enclosure with a pool, and two weeks after her arrival, people are already coming to see her.'

And, quickly adapting to life among humans, the seal has her own live webcam so her worldwide fans can follow her - which broadcasts between 7am and 1pm UK time.

Miss Frolova said: 'She has a good appetite, and always seems in a happy mood. She is such an unusual seal with very beautiful bright blue eyes. When she arrived, she was tired after the long flight, but soon picked up her appetite.'

Experts at the dolphinarium say Nafanya's eyesight is not as poor as at first feared. Originally thought to be almost blind, it turns out she only has trouble seeing in bright sunlight.

Her keepers say she loves being the centre of attention, and Ms Frolova added: 'She has a playful nature. She loves to play with her toy - a small blue ball. 'But what she likes the most its to play with a fish at feeding time. She will follow it, catch it, put it in her mouth, release it and finally eat it.'

'Nafanya is such a lovely animal and is certainly not afraid of people.'

Ms Frolova explained: 'We cannot yet let her swim with our other creatures as she is on a month-long quarantine, but we will do later. We will make sure she has a happy life in our dolphinarium.'

Carole the bear cub has sure grown a lot!!! He is eating over 7 cups of assorted foods per day and according to Amanda Nicholson at WCV they are going to release the bear cub this winter. She stated "In Virginia, bears aren't true hibernators, so I don't think he'll be going to bed for months at a time. He'll be released down in Suffolk, where he came from, and it even stays a bit warmer down there."

I just wonder where he is going to find enough food

River good going on the fundraiser :)^

Another :<<o>>: Eagle euthanized :'( :'( :'(

Raptor expert Tim Driscoll carries the injured bald eagle to his truck.

Lead poisoning likely contributed to mishap that resulted in broken wing
There’ll be no live release, no place in a living educational display, no happy ending for a bald eagle with a broken wing that was rescued Tuesday afternoon along the Red Lake River in East Grand Forks and taken to the Raptor Center in St. Paul.

Julie Ponder, executive director of the Raptor Center in St. Paul, said today that blood tests showed a “high amount” of lead in the eagle’s system. The lead affects neurological functions, she said, making the birds more likely to be hit by vehicles or fly into obstacles such as power lines.

“They have less ability to survive,” Ponder said. “They’re more sluggish, not flying as well. It really affects almost every organ system in the body.”

The eagle that had to be euthanized was first reported Tuesday afternoon, when East Grand Forks resident Rick Galstad noticed the bird in a neighbor’s yard while on his way home for lunch.

“At first, I thought he’d caught a rabbit or something,” Galstad, an East Grand Forks chiropractor, said in a story that appeared on Page A1 Wednesday. “Then I saw his wing.”

Galstad’s wife, Cathy, contacted the Raptor Center, which in turn notified Tim Driscoll, director of the Urban Raptor Research Project in Grand Forks.

Driscoll was able to capture the injured eagle with Galstad’s help.

After administering basic first aid to the eagle, Driscoll kept the bird in his house Tuesday night. The next day, he drove the eagle to a veterinarian in Fargo, which transported the bird to the Raptor Center on Wednesday night.

Ponder, who also is a veterinarian, said the report she received showed too much bone had been exposed on the fractured wing, which rendered it beyond repair.

“If it’s exposed too long, the bone tissue dies pretty quickly,” she said. “In order to fix it, you’d have to shorten the wing, and the bird wouldn’t be able to fly.”

Ponder said the Raptor Center receives most of its injured eagles this time of year, a trend that coincides with deer hunting season. She said a former veterinary resident at the Raptor Center did research linking the onset of deer season with incidents of lead poisoning.

Deer hunters typically use lead bullets, and eagles, which are scavengers, are prone to ingesting fragments when they feed on deer gut piles.

“They start showing up about a week after deer season opens up,” Ponder said. “This is the time of year we expect most eagles to come in.”

Ponder said research shows adult eagles have higher rates of lead poisoning than juvenile birds. She said the bird rescued Tuesday in East Grand Forks was an adult female. The eagle likely had flown into a power line.

I just got back from the doctor who is also a good friend. He wasn't concerned about my nose but why I passed out. He gave me a full examination and my BP was normal. He diagnosed it as a sudden drop in BP which is quite a common thing. Then he sent me for x-rays of the nose, won't have the results for a few days. :( He thought my nose was a tiny bit crooked :o but that could be the swelling

G'day Peeps, My Tuesday, normally work from home but so busy came to the office. I had a dreadful night last night. Having to do with work stress and over tired I think. Did I tell you I washed Bob's really old pillow? NEVER wash a feather pillow in the w.machine. Why didnt my mother tell me that? The result was Bob had to get a new feather pillow for his bad neck and he snored REALLY loud with it. I finally had to get up and sleep in the other bedroom, dropping off after fighting Leo off my chest and head.... So very tired today. Then my favorite habit coffee shop was closed this morning.

I love the sad story about the red seal pup. Happy but sad ending, not to be wild.

Very sad about the BE lead poisoning. :(

I too followed your Thanksgiving on FB Deb, except for your cold, you mustve had a great time!

yes, glad you got yourself check out too Carole!

Another down day for the WC, shesh. Poor WCs

Very warm and sunny today, more sprinkles predicted for later today tho.

Very busy at the office, everyone stay well!

Hi Everyone! Penny, I'm so sick of hunters and their lead bullets. Personally, hunting for sport is sick, and simply murder of innocent lives. I know the ORC had to put down the golden eagle with lead posioning from stupd bullets.

I seriously would like to hunt these idiots down. I get so mad at this. grrrr.

Hope you had all a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. I had TG dinner with Kathie (Iggle) and her mom. It was fab! I wish I could work out, I've been dealing with back problems since early October...and going crazy. Maybe Santa will bring me relief.

I love being here with all of you, but I space out....what else is new.
