Quoting Ozzie-"Jillers, thats about the third time you've posted a funny picture that I saw just before within 24 hours, how weird is that. And read about the Dubai pooper trucks a couple of days ago, thats planning back to front instead of front to back! " I think you probably get the same e-mails I do Ozzie, from Bee!

Wings Haliaeetus - Amanda posted on the WCV chat yesterday that NX was chattering to Dr. Dave the whole time she was being examined….. I’m thinking these were some of her thoughts about the whole experience.![]() From the WCV FB page |

Deb that was quite a detailed report you got on Trinity from the DNA analysis...just goes to prove you can never tell a book by it's cover. She looks all GSD on the outside ![]() Karen I know what you mean , a few tears were shed here too, especially for the Great Dane ![]() The owner was arrested on her a perfect present from her dog People like her should never be allowed to have pets...wonder how she is as a 'Mom'? Maybe not much better

Trinity turned out just right! I think it will be a big relief to say bye-bye to your boss, Deb. Sounds like the longest good-bye and you've done well to hang in there through all the stress. That poor Great Dane. I was smiling through the NX comments until I got to the part about her Mom.

WCV UPDATE ON NX FROM CHAT Saturday December 3, 2011 3:58 BekiP 4:46 PiedmontN8ive: Just a quick re-post from Ed Clark a bit earlier: Ed Clark, WCV: Good afternoon everyone. We have the afternoon update on NX. As you have heard from Congo, we found a few more issues than could be detected without xrays. Here is the text of Dr. Dave's report: December 3 examination On the morning of Saturday, December 3, NX was anesthetized for radiographs and a physical examination. Dr. Dave found an open wound on the left wing [flushed and sutured]; a ruptured airsac; a left-eye injury; and soft-tissue swelling over the right wrist [although the bones and tendons seem fine]. Two additional areas of concern: GI tract. NX regurgitated overnight; her crop was empty this morning. NX will be given some mice/small chunks of rat this evening to see if she will eat. Dr. Dave would like to take a look at NX’s GI tract within the next week, using the Center’s new endoscope. Left shoulder. NX’s left shoulder looks slightly drooped, and there may be a slight decreased range of motion. Dr. Dave spotted what might be a small fracture on the head of the coracoid; additional radiographs [after shoulder swelling has subsided] may provide more insights. To be on the safe side, the Center vet team wrapped NX’s left wing in a body wrap. Dr. Dave thinks these injuries are consistent with NX having been struck by a vehicle. So, there you go. Nothing too shocking, actually. All of these injuries are relatively "normal" for a bird that has been hit by a car. She had been in the area where she was injured for about 24 hours, but we cannot know when during that period she actually sustained the injury...or even if there was more than one incident. We can only deal with what we do know, and that is as we have stated. It is far too soon to make a prognosis, but we remain optimistic. Post Script: ... Don't let the long list of issues alarm you. The big thing at this point is the possible fracture of the coracoid (sort of like a collarbone, but in birds) and the injure to the right wrist. The good news is that the wrist looks normal, but swollen from the apparent impact. We are listing all the details, because we keep complete records in our medical files, and we want to be sure that no problem, even if slight, is overlooked in follow-up care. |

Lily the Black Bear - Update Saturday, December 3, 2011 Lily, Honey, Den Cams, and a Story ![]() Lily and Faith in den - Dec 3, 2011 Preparations for Lily and Faith’s den cam meant a quick trip to the den today to check their sleeping position. The picture shows them both tucked into one end of the den where rocks overhead create a small ‘room.’ The technology team for Lily and Faith’s den is working away. For Lucky and Honey’s den cam, we’re hoping the local technicians can get together Monday and get it going. Honey is doing interesting REM sleep and we’d like to get the camera up and recording it as soon as possible. Bear Center Curator Donna Andrews saw our mention in an update about Honey inviting Lucky into her den 3 years ago. She looked up the video she took at the time and posted it on YouTube. She took it through the Bear Center viewing windows, so there is no sound except the music she added. Unbelievable that Honey would be antagonistic toward Lucky the rest of the year and have such a change of heart when she saw him walking by her den. The video shows it. ![]() trail cam pic of bear with sunglasses! Could this story be true? A Lily fan who has been a friend for over a decade emailed it with the picture. She wrote, “My friend Janet has a motion detector camera. She lost her sunglasses way out in the woods on November 11th. She searched everywhere for them. No luck. When she went back to check the camera on November 14th, the sunglasses were lying there near the camera. She was totally bewildered because the day she lost the glasses, she had not been to the camera area. Then she downloaded the pictures, and guess what!!!! Janet says, tongue in cheek, that the bear brought her glasses to the camera area and left them there for her.” Based on the words “tongue in cheek,” we at the Research Center think a person found the glasses and put them near the camera where a passing bear investigated the novel object and got its picture taken. But that’s just a guess. Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |

From our experience with Crows, the broken coracoid bone like NX has been diagnosed with (the equivalent of the clavicle) can't be splinted and can permanently affect their flying ability. We rescued and fostered an injured Crow with a broken coracoid bone some years ago who the vet told us would never be able to fly well enough to survive in the wild because of it. Juno, as we named him, stayed with us while he recovered and eventually went to live in a Bird Sanctuary with other unreleasable Crows. Every time we went to visit him as soon as he heard Ed's voice he'd start calling out and was so happy to see him. Ed had bonded with him and he'd eat Peanuts from his hand. He lived there for several more years before falling ill from some undiagnosed ailment.
