Kris we were never at that museum but it would be a definite 'must' if we go back ![]() For some reason it brought to mind the gargoyle house just off the boardwalk in Venice Beach... ![]() We took copious of it but they are not handy so here's someone else's ![]() It’s not every neighborhood where you can mount gargoyles and cloven-hoofed figures all over your house without having the local home owners association up in arms ![]() |

My grandkids are growing way too fast. These are the three youngest. They all went on a Northern Israel vacation for a couple of days. I'll have to find out where this is. It looks like Cruzneyland in the background doesn't it. ![]() ![]()

![]() We had an amazing experience today just after I snapped this pic. We were at Silbury Hill, the neolithic site that is the largest manmade pyramid in Europe. It's a short drive from where we live and one of the major sacred sites in the area. We were aghast to see that a flock of Sheep were grazing on it. No one's even allowed to walk up it, let alone Sheep making destructive paths on it's carefully preserved flanks. Tomorrow Ed's going to call National Heritage to report it, but that's beside the point. What happened was that as we stood on top of the overlooking hill THOUSANDS of Starlings flew over us in a huge murmuration! The sound of their thousands of wings beating was the most incredible sound of nature I've ever experienced! I looked up the definition of "murmuration" and found, among other definitions, including how it refers to a general "low indistinct murmuring", the word refers to a group of Starlings just as a "gaggle of Geese", or a "murder of Crows" denotes a group of a particular Bird. But in the case of Starlings the "murmuration" of their "murmuration" made it obvious to us why it was named that. A thrilling moment as the Sun set beyond Silbury Hill. Penny, that museum really is a "must", and I knew you'd love it! Ah, the Gargoyle House! I knew it well when I worked at Sony Pictures in that Venice neighborhood, near the MJT. Topa, your grandchildren are really growing like weeds! I can't believe how big they're getting, and such precious lovely kids!

Penny, yes I did! I had seen that video, so was all the more impressed with our experience. Though it wasn't as huge as the one in the video, it was very large and so impressive to have them flying so low over us and hearing the amazing sound of their thousands of wings! PS: It caught us by surprise and I wish I'd had my camera ready, but I didn't and if I'd fumbled for it in the few seconds it took for them to fly over I wouldn't have experienced the moment as fully. What! Its Monday already in Sydney!?!![]() G'day Peeps, on Deck at the Office. And its really really cold today, for summer. Only 52F! What summer!? Love your write up of the evening Deb! Great news about NX, wow fiesty I dont think covers it from the photo! Jillers, Yes, we do get the same emails, but not of some of the photos you've posted. Did get the human bone email from Bee! Speaking of murmations, gaggle of geese, murder of crows, I wonder what the call a gathering of flying foxes> They have taken over the back Moreton Bay Fig tree and poop everywhere. The parking area is crunchy with their droppings and the smell is awful when it rains (and its been raining). Fortunately they are only there when the tree is fruiting so it should cease soon. Cathy your Grandkids look so happy! Okay, I better do some work! |

Ozzie, no mention of Flying Foxes here but this list has the names for all kinds of collective nouns for various species of Birds. (I found it looking up "murmuration of Starlings")

Deb...so glad you are feeling much better! Wow! You were sick for quite awhile there. Was it the flu or what? I sure hope NX is going to be releaseable! Being as how she is so feisty is a good sign that she is a fighter and hopefully will overcome these injuries. At least she wasn't killed! Thank God for that! The RTH Cha Cha slide...... I laughed thru that whole video!! Kris ...how lucky you are to have witnessed that murmuration! I saw that video back when it first came out and thought how remarkable it is! I also read why they do that and it was fascinating! I see small murmurations here everyday but nothing on that scale. Savta Topa Cathy...your grandkids are just so adorable! I bet they are fun to be with Baila is going to be a beautiful young lady when she grows up! And those boys will probably have all the girls wanting to date them This morning we went to breakfast at the Twenty20 Grill and Bar at the Sheraton Hotel over in Carlsbad. It was a cold crisp morning but sunny and clear! The hotel is up on a hill overlooking Legoland Theme Park and affords a beautiful view of the ocean. It looked so clear we thought we might be able to see Catalina so after breakfast we drove up the coast just past San Onofre but it was hazier up there so you could just make out the shadow of the islands. Lots of surfers and pelis today! We stopped at San Onofre State Beach Surf Camp to take some pics. http://s288.photobucket.com/albums/ll180/KareninSoCali/December%204%202011/?albumview=slideshow Edited by KareninSoCali, Dec 4 2011, 05:08 PM.

Kris, how fortunate to see and hear the murmuration. NX is looking very spunky in her photo. Karen, I tried to view your pictures but I got the RT doing the cha-cha with your link. |
