I'm so glad the forum problems got worked out. :><: For a while I thought it was my computer or browser.

Here's a link to some additional info on what sounds like a further diversion of funds donated to Japan's Tsunami victims, that's going to the unconscionable Antarctic Whale hunt that's now underway. This time it's supposedly "for security" to protect the Whalers on their "Scientific Expedition".

The film The End of the Line paints a horrific picture of the fate of the oceans and its inhabitants due to overfishing. Mitsubishi Corp. is a huge force behind the devastation of Blue Fin Tuna in particular. They seem to want to harvest them all with no regard to the survival of the species, and stockpile them in huge warehouses as seen in the film. :'(

On a lighter note: I'm sure this will entertain the more Northern Easties and Canadians here but, as a So Cal girl, frost is still a novelty. We had our second frost of the season and the lawn was all white and frosty a few mornings ago. Even the wooden Birdhouse feeder was frosted. :P Today it's freezing rain and gale force winds. Not such a novelty. :(

This is a Rook, a local corvid that flocks in groups and also comes to our feeders. Rooks have bald faces and look odd compared to American Crows but are very similar otherwise. This cute Rook has been hanging around and making friends with Ed, who’s been feeding whole grain bread to the Rooks, Jackdaws, and Crows on the lawn in the mornings, and to the Ducks and Swans in the canal. This Rook chatters happily at him when he goes out to feed them.

Morning :) Cold and wet here. Not only has it been raining all day so far it is also in the mid 40s! I am freezing! Our classroom has forced air heat that works fine when you first turn it on but it will cycle off when its warm enough in here, then when it cycles back on it just blows COLD air! It takes about an hr. of blowing cold air before the air will warm up again. And its preset to a certain temp that we can't change as its locked in. My hands are so cold I can hardly type. One of the things I HATE about working for the school district. I can complain til I am blue in the face but no one will fix it. Can't wait to go home on break so I can warm up! Maybe I'll wear my long underwear this afternoon so my legs will be warmer.

Penny...Jim doesn't have restless leg. I was reading something about it on the internet the other day. He has this.... Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) is repetitive cramping or jerking of the legs during sleep. It is the only movement disorder that occurs only during sleep, and it is sometimes called periodic leg (or limb) movements during sleep. "Periodic" refers to the fact that the movements are repetitive and rhythmic, occurring about every 20-40 seconds. PLMD is also considered a sleep disorder, because the movements often disrupt sleep and lead to daytime sleepiness.

PLMD may occur with other sleep disorders. Itis often linked with restless legs syndrome, but they are not the same thing. Restless legs syndrome is a condition involving strange sensations in the legs (and sometimes arms) while awake and an irresistible urge to move the limbs to relieve the sensations. At least 80% of people with restless legs syndrome have PLMD, but the reverse is not true.

Jim really needs to go for a sleep study. I know he has sleep apnea as he can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. He can even get up in the morning, eat breakfast, sit down in his chair to watch tv and he'll fall right to sleep. All within less than an hr. of getting up in the morning. If he is busy working or doing something that involves anything physical he stays awake just fine. But the minute he sits down to relax he falls asleep. Am hoping to get him in for a study but our insurance is changing after the first of the yr. so I want to wait as he'll have to change drs.

Karen it sounds as though Jim really needs to get into a sleep study because he needs a Cpap machine. I'm sure Deb will be able to fill you in on all that because ES needs one and takes it with him everywhere...even camping in the woods :)^

Sometimes falling asleep after eating has to do with blood sugar levels and could be an indicator of Diabetes.

If he can :Zz: then you will probably be able to as well or....sleep in separate beds...I know people who actually do that because of sleep disruption issues :)^

Re: Sleep Apnea and C-Pap: my DD, Lori works for the man who invented the C-Pap Pro (is an official representative and even gets commission on sales). I don't know the website link but could get it and post if it would help, or PM/EM me for the info. :ok:

;) Taronga Zoo, Dec2011

G'day Peeps, my Wednesday at the office. Yesterday I had a long afternoon in the Sydney City. Saw a client then went stocking stuffer shopping. I ended up buying two gifts for myself too. A lovely sun hat and some pretty sterling silver dangle earrings. I was actually surprised I found anything to buy at all as Australia is usually so expensive but things are on sale already.

Then I went to the movies. A real Grade B movie in 3D, the Immortals. Terrible acting. :o I loved it. ;) :D

Great WC photo from above it! Too bad about the down days but at least they are warmer. And speaking of warmer for you peeps in the Cold, The sun is actually shining today and its going to hit over 70, a miracle!

I was awake at 4am wondering why I didnt hear any snoring, Bob is away! Well, I tossed for another hour and finally got up. Rachel wanted me to put together a Mexican dinner for her GFs tonight. She is going to the store for some provisions (with her own money I presume) but I had the black beans, chorizo, chicken with marinade and tortillas. So I started the crock pot for the beans and the marinade for the chicken. Then I did some laundry, then I goofed around finally leaving for work just after 6am. Stopped to get petrol just under a quarter tank only to find I'd forgotten my wallet! I'd switch bags when I went to town yesterday. Doh! Have exactly $19.85 in change as well as what appears to be Greek money. I have no idea where that came from?! Rachel mustve dumped into the glass bowl we use for change. So I have enough for a coffee, maybe a sushi roll and $10 for sailing. I brought a peach with me to eat for lunch. sigh.

Love your photos of the crispy grass Kris.

Hope your DH gets his issues sorted out Karen, I bet it keeps you awake too!

Love the Christmas Cactus!

GOODBYE LITTLE CUBBIE :}^ <3

MVK: Little cubby in your den, to see you now would bring a grin.
We know it's time for you to go, to run and play and frolic so.
Be careful cub wherever you roam, remember WCV will always be home.
Grow strong and big and scarey too, so nothing will try to bother you.
We will be sad to see you go, but in our hearts your wild, we know.
As you leave know that we care, and want you to be a big brave bear.
Remember to always look both ways, be wary of men and their hunting ways.
So dear little cubby it's time to say, Eagle Nation sends you love in a big big way.

December 13 update
Bear cub #11-2532 was shut in his den on the morning of December 13, to ensure that he would not eat in the hours before his sedation. At about 3:00 p.m., Dr. Miranda and team ventured up the hill to sedate the cub — this time, they calculated a dose for a 65 lb bear!

Things went smoothly and within about 20 minutes, the bear was asleep. Dr. Miranda and rehabilitator Suzy pulled the bear out of the den for a quick examination and a blood draw. At some point during the examination, the cub opened his eyes — but remained still. Dr. Miranda decided a final weight wasn’t really all that important after all. The team quickly loaded the bear into a DGIF biologist’s culvert trap — a very sturdy and safe way to transport bears. Dr. Miranda quickly injected a medication for reversing the sedation.

The cub will be released in a very rural area in southeast Virginia. The bear will have a very minimal chance of crossing any major roads or coming across any people.

Lily the Black Bear - Update December 13, 2011 – 6:13 PM CST

No bear news

mother and yearling

It’s an inside day as technicians move forward on Lucky and Honey’s Den Cam, Sue travels to Maine, and we mull over your ideas from the survey. Lynn is also writing an addendum to the response he mailed to the DNR yesterday. The writing just doesn’t end.

This idea came from a Lily fan today. There are Lily fans across North America who see familiar bears often enough to gather data on dates of family break-up within a few days. We’ve gathered considerable data on family break-up for bears in NE Minnesota, but information from other parts of black bear range would add depth to the study. If Lily fans would seize opportunities to record their observations we might be able to see patterns. We would need the date the mother was last seen with her yearlings, and the date she or the yearlings were next seen alone. In addition to the dates we would need your state and the nearest city. Also, notes on any behaviors observed or other bears present would be helpful. With enough observations we might see regional patterns. If the dates are about the same across their range (eastern deciduous forest, boreal forest, western mountains, etc.), that would be as interesting as if dates differ among regions. We’re not aware of much research on this subject, and Lily fans might come up with something.

We think of family breakup occurring just before or during mating season, but the timing of mating varies from region to region. Where bears have to fatten in summer, like in northeastern Minnesota, break-up is in May or early June and mating is completed before berries ripen so bears can concentrate on eating in summer to get fat enough to maintain pregnancies. Mating season occurs later in areas where there are abundant fall mast crops (acorns, hickory nuts, beechnuts) than in areas where fall foods are scarce and bears must fatten in summer (berries, hazelnuts). There is reason to think family break-up might be later in those areas as well.

We’ll be glad to see the Volunteer Applications roll out in January. We keep thinking of ways Lily fans can help in other ways.

Thank you for all you do.

:X: Good luck little cubbie .... you have many people wishing you all the best, hoping you thrive out there in the wild where you should be.

Kris, I really liked your pretty frost pictures. :clk: Ed is making good friends with your neighbourhood birds. :)^ The whole whaling issue with Japan just makes me :'( . The rook has quite a beak!!

Ozzie, you definitely squeezed a lot into your day, my goodness. How nice to be able to find some special things for yourself, and at a good price. :D One time on my way home from school on a Monday I had my gas tank filled up (back in the day when they did it for us). I reached in my briefcase for my wallet and realized that I hadn't put it back in there after the weekend. Oh, no. :( I left the attendant my name and phone number and rushed home to get my money, then returned to pay them. It was an awful feeling.

I went for a few more stocking stuffers today. There were lineups everywhere, even in the middle of the day on a Tuesday. Jeepers.
